Need advice on new pc

Thread Starter
Im making a new pc. Ive done this 2 or 3 other times. Id like it to play Napolean Total War, and Star Wars Old republic when it comes out, on the highest graphics settings, which is why I wanted other peoples opinions. The last time I made a pc there was no such thing as sli or xfire. I was hoping to only buy one video card but if you think I need two to play these games on the highest settings then I'll cough up the cash.

I live in montreal, so I was thinking of ordering everything from newegg.ca.
microbytes doesnt have as many stuff as newegg.

And it would be nice if I dont have to overclock anything.

My build

CPU : intel Core i7-960

I have a laptop with i7 and I really like it, except it overheats quickly(probably a mistake applying the heat thing on the cpu). In fact I wouldnt be buying a new computer if my laptop had a better video card.

Mobo :
ASUS Sabertooth X58 ATX Intel Motherboard

ASUS P6X58D-E ATX Intel Motherboard

ASUS Rampage II Extreme ATX Intel Motherboard

Video card : Ati radeon Radeon HD 6850

Im sure of which cpu I want, but not the motherboard and video card, those are what I need help with as there are way too many and I dont know that much about stream processing and stuff like that.

I also have no idea what memory I need except it needs to be 1066

EDIT: Under 1000$

I'm a bit confused. You're doing a fresh build right ? Give me your total budget and I'll help you out happily.

so you are definitely going with the 960 and one of those 3 boards ? but that's the only thing you have picked out ? Do you have anything salvageable from your old rig ? Will you need an OS, monitor, or any other peripherals or just the hardware ?

I5-2500k, $150 motherboard. GTX 560 Ti or HD 6950 2 gb... 1 TB HDD ... 4-8 gb of ram....quality 600-650 watt psu...$50-80 case... and add a SSD if there is anything left.

for 800 you can build yourself something very respectable. No need for dual card setup to play the games you mentioned. Here's what I would go with.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115072
the best value dollar for dollar cpu on the market by far in my humble opinion.

super solid board. this is the board I want actually..... biggrin.gif

great card. you couldn't go wrong with a gtx 570/580 either, just a preference of mine.

can't go wrong here. lifetime warranty and the best customer service I've experienced.

this is just the cpu, mobo, ram and gpu like you said. I'll happily help you pick out a solid psu if you need help. Lots of ppl tend to get cheap when it comes to that and that's the last place you should be trying to go cheap.

if you need $1000 cpu, graphics card, motherboard and memory here is what I would go with:

I wish I could say how intensive those games will be, but regardless this graphics card will run them and any other game for that matter no problem. thumb.gif

edit: re the i7 960, its ok CPU, but not as good as the 2500k.

I think Im going to use your build exactly.

There are three things I want to know though:
Are you sure this will run Napolean Total War on the highest quality settings? What about Shogun Total war?

And

If I decide to overclock it, is the ram you selected the best one to overclock it with?

And

Do you think the extreme4 is better than the extreme6? Or did you choose extreme4 because its a little cheaper?

EDIT: The reason I dont want to buy nvidia is because I used to have a computer 4 years ago, and I bought 3 different geforce 7800gs video cards and I had problems with every single one of them. 2 of them stopped working and one of them had a very noisy fan, probably not enough lubrication or they installed it incorrectly, it made an extremely loud whistling noise.

This was a great suggestion, I completely forgot about these sites. Their prices are way cheaper, and they wont have to go through customs either. Thanks a lot.

And I found out that apparently the i5 2500k comes with an integrated gpu and I figured it would be wasted if I used a p56, so Im thinking of getting a z68 chipset.

So my build is looking like this:

i5 2500k
z68 mobo
Asus radeon hd 6970
g.skill ripjaws ram x4 (16gb)

That video card is the most expensive item in the list.
