it's funny you say that. I offered her my Asus netbook for free, but she said she didn't want it because she didn't like how it looked....

Typical girls. She thinks its a purse.

I'd say this is a perfect excuse to do a llano build

It's overkill, but gives you a socket you can play with years down the road and gives her a machine that has years of good performance in it.

I also suggest doing a micro-ATX build. Smaller case will take up less space in cramped college life.

That's $370 shipped w/no OS or accessories.

^^^ @ insyxion: Generic DDR3-1333 CL9 will cause up to 50% loss in gaming performance and/or up to 20% loss in all around performance, on AMD socket FM1/APU platform. This is due to CPU & GPU sharing system memory and a large bandwidth requirement.

Spend the $4 less (wait a minute... I said less!) on a quality DDR3-1600 CL8 kit! Entirely worth the $4...... less..

What's your exact budget? For as low as ~$200 you can get a good PC...
Athlon II x2 220 - $41 shipped [Superbiiz]

(full HD video playback, incl. YouTube supported) - $55 shipped [Amazon]
2x2GB OCZ Flex DDR3-1600 CL8 - $18 + $5 shipping [Directron]
Rosewill R379-M small form factor case and PSU - $40.50 shipped [Newegg] after promo code (see link) [I ALWAYS suggest slim cases for builds like this]
Samsung F3 1TB HDD - $58 shipped [Superbiiz]
Rosewill 80MM CPU cooler - $10 shipped [Newegg] (you could probably get one on your local Craigslist for cheaper though - whereabouts in California are you?)
COUPONS
Newcustomer10 - $10 off [Newegg]
DEALMONGO - $15 off [Superbiiz]

For $202.50 shipped you have probably the cheapest good PC possible - unless you're a good brother and want to spend more

(No DVD drive included.... not sure if you need one though, according to your original post might not even; for reference one costs ~$20)

Your arrows are pointing at the wrong post

I suggested a proper kit for a 3650 build. Those ripjaws can be tweaked not to bottle the APU just fine.

^ I see
I wonder if an APU would be that necessary for school work and chatting though
I multi-tab browse and watch various media up to 720p on a laptop with a 1.7Ghz Pentium M and 2x256MB DDR2, just fine
Granted, a lot of things are probably not optimal (i.e. DDR2-400) and it can be quite sluggish at times (the worst part is when RAM runs out, but the newest firefox alphas use less RAM so it's better), but it works for me and I got it for free.
Hence I suggested the cheapest possible with new parts, that can at least play back full 1080p, expandability, and gracious drive space.

CPU: AMD Athlon II X2 250 -$59.99

HDD: Seagate Barracuda 1TB -$54.99

Total comes to $408.68(includes shipping and standard CA tax @8.75%). For it, you get:

-A case with four fans, front USB 3.0 slot, lots of room for expansion
-An AM3+ mobo(yes, AM3+) that is pretty future-resistant
-4GB of blazing fast 1600MHz DDR3
-A huge 1TB HDD for all her music, video, photos, and schoolwork document storage needs
-An overkill CPU(considering it's just schoolwork/chatting/web surfing)

It's a big bang for your buck if you ask me.

EDIT: Oh, and of course this is without an OS.. but I suggest a Linux distro ;D. But if she's not very tech-savvy, then a W7 Home Premium Copy would run you another $100... so roughly $500.
I aggree with him this is good system. But OEM phenom II x4 925 are on newegg for 90$

That's what I suggested. That should never stick for what she will be doing too.
