Win 7 - User account problem

Thread Starter
Recently I noticed a problem with Win 7 (64-bit) that occurs when i try to update already installed software. For example, I went to update VLC media player, and after it downloads the file and begins to install, I get a pop-up window (screen shot of message is attached to this post) stating that I don't have permission to install and requires me to enter a password. I only have 1 user account on this PC and it has admin. rights but I never setup a password for it so I'm not sure what to do. Any help or advice is sincerely appreciated.

(Apologies for the poor quality of SS in attachment)

Try to log in to admin first. Also, try to disable User account controls to see if that helps.

Control panel,system security.

If there's an update .exe for that program, then instead of just clicking it, right click and choose run as administrator.

But ya, I'd also disable UAC

Thanks very much for both of your replies. UAC was already disabled but I was able to update VLC by right clicking on the .exe and choosing to run as Admin. Didn't have to do this before, which seems a bit strange, but at least i got it working. Thanks again for the help. Sincerely appreciated.

Odd, it wouldnt do that if you didnt password the Default Administrator account, or if your account has sufficient rights.

Hmm, If you want.. Clear the passwords to any accounts you have. This cmd should still work on Win7 (I havent used in awhile)

Open run menu (windows key + r)
type 'cmd'
Command Prompt should open, now right click Command Prompt in the bottom bar, right click the smaller Command Prompt icon and click 'Run as Administrator'
If that requires a password still, ignore the above step and continue from here:
type 'net user' to bring up a list of registered accounts on your PC.
then type 'net user accountname *'
Example 'net user Administrator *'
It will ask you to write a new password, just press enter twice to set no password.
close Command Prompt.

Now try again :| Hopefully it'll work now.. Or if it doesn't and is still asks for user/pass try 'Administrator' blank password. (All being that you cleared it like above)

Thanks again for the responses. I went ahead and reset the PW using the method ShadowEW posted and it confirmed the PW had changed, so now I just need to find a program that needs updating to test it out. Sincerely appreciate the help and advice.
