Headphones: To Get or Not to Get

Thread Starter

Well, I'm looking for headphones again. I was set on the ATH-M50s, then moved onto the AH-D2000's, and now I'm extremely unsure now.

I'm planning on using these headphones for gaming (moderate), movies (and anime), and music (classical, rock, and Vocaloids ). I'm looking at the

, , and the . I am accepting recommendations. No more than $400 please. Thanks.

I've had the three of those and they are all good choices. I still own the AH-D2000 and use them often. I suggest you try one at a time starting with the HD650's because they are easy to resell here. If you get the AH-D2000 let them play for 100+ hours before you judge them and after that look into some of the cool mods.

What amp are you using? DTs and Senns are kinda hard to drive, not so much the Denons

I agree with trying them all. Between this forum and head fi it is extremely easy to buy and sell all headphones.

I tried them in Japan at Yodaboshi Camera. They're extremely comfortable although they sounded a bit boxy but merely. The AH-D5000's sounded more...laid back? It also didn't sound boxy at all. The DT880 was comfortable too. I just didn't know which version it was. They only had the HD600's there.

@NorCa: I'm probably going to use a receiver. Probably a 75 or 90 watt Denon or a 100< watt Yamaha.

I didn't feel like the D2000 was a $200 headphone (which is what it goes for when it's on sale) and definitely not a $350 headphone. It's a bit better than a modded JVC HA-RX700 (maybe 10-25%) but the RX700 is a $35 headphone. Out of all the headphones you listed, it's probably the most versatile for all the things you listed but eh...not worth the price IMO. And it has a cloth cable that will fray and get tangled.

You can't go wrong with 650s for your needs..
Love them for classical and movies/gaming.

Come to think of it, I think the DT880 is probably the most neutral sounding of the three. The D2000 has a V shaped frequency response, and the HD650 can get really dark sounding if you don't have a good amp.

Will a receiver be able to drive it? I'm looking at the AVR-1612, AVR-1712, RX-V371, and RX-V471. If those can't drive it, I'll get the Schiit Asgard, Valhalla, or Lyr along with a Bifrost if I have the cash.

If i were you I'd buy the HD650, FWIR they have a lot to offer with every upgrade in your chain (source, cables, amp). Great foundation for an audiophile setup! I think they are a step above the Denons or Beyers imho. Good Luck !

I've heard great things about the Asgard! Although I'm not sure how good/bad is the headphone out from denon/yamaha receivers.
