Can I successfully use an older cooler with my sandy bridge 2500k?

I currently have a Zalman Ultra Quiet CPU Cooler that I've been using for a year or two. Do I need to upgrade this on my new system which is a sandy bridge 2500k? Are the mounting holes the same? It also uses a strange kind of latch that straps across the heatsink and presses it to the chip. My old chip was a core 2 quad. Thanks.

If your cooler has support for LGA 1156 then it can support a 2500k. If not, you're out of luck and would have to buy something else. If you are forced to get a new cooler (unless you wanna stick with stock) then get a Hyper 212+.

I have an E6600 that it is mounted on now. Do you mean if it FITS on the board or if it is DESIGNED when you say "has support for"? I don't have the mobo yet, it should arrive today, so I can't see the footprint for the mounting hardware, which is why I ask the question. I know they make newer models of the Zalman, but I don't think a LGA1156 existed when I purchased the cooler.

Then no, it won't work.

Ok, I checked at my local Fry's and they had them (Hyper 212+) in stock, so I went down and grabbed one. I'll be able to build my machine tonight without having to pull the motherboard out again in a few days, thanks for the info guys.

Thermaltake and Sythe both have conversion kits for their best 775 socket coolers to allow them to be used on 1155/1156 motherboard/cpu setups... I believe Xigmatek does as well...

You can do a quick Google search to get the details, but they are out there... I just used one to mount an original Sythe Mugen on my i7-2600k... No worries...

I got everything set up, posting from that machine now. I was amazed that I didn't have to reinstall windows 7 after upgrading motherboard, processor and ram.

Heh, don't be too amazed. You may run in to issues, I did when I upgraded.

My friend did had the same issues on his setup when he upgraded too. For the Op. I do think if you got spare HDD space and a partition to setup a clean install of your OS there, you don't know if something may come up where you would be forced to basically reinstall win7 due to some incompatibility issues or whatnot - at least do have a clean install on another partition/hdd to be safe.
