Will upgrade to Windows 7 work like this?

Thread Starter
Hello OCN!

So I recently started building my computer. I thought I was set until I looked closer at the Windows 7 student discount. I realized it was only the upgrade version @ $30. I was looking for ways to utilize this deal or to get windows 7 onto my new computer as cheap as possible.

I thought of a few ideas, will anyone confirm if these ideas work?

1) ~~~~ XP, then use the Windows 7 upgrade @ $30.
-Can do clean install, since there is nothing on the drive yet.

2) Buy a copy of OEM XP, then use the windows 7 upgrade @ $30.
-From a seller like this : http://tiny.cc/l761j

3) Anyone have a better idea?

Thanks in advanced guys

I wonder whether the old Vista upgrade trick of install clean with no CD key, do an in-place upgrade install (this time using the CD key) over the top will still work with Windows 7?

Can you upgrade from XP > 7?

I know you can from Vista > 7..

Also, does the Upgrade come with a CD / Install key.. If not, then its not going to be much use.. If it does, you could always pirate a version of Win7 and install using your key.
Don't take my word on this, do a little research, although.. I don't see why It can't work..

Also, this upgrade.. Which version is is? Home / Pro / Ultimate. I'd guess Home..

This method should work. The steps refer to windows vista but it has been confirmed that the method works with windows 7 too.

I'm not gonna lecture on how piracy is wrong, but think about this, would you check your bank account or make payments from a rig that could be compromised? In the end it could be more expensive.

You can install from zero Win7 from an upgrade disk, it doesn't really have to be an upgrade. The only thing is that you install W7 once WITHOUT any key, and the "upgrade" this W7 to another W7 (same disk) and that you can activate and use normally. There's a guide at the supersite for windows on how to do this step by step: click. This is btw completely legal IF you own another copy of Windows. You should be able to find old Win licenses for cheap, only make sure they're legit.

Bottom line: go for No2 if you can check in any way that license is ok, then install Win7 as written on the guide I've linked.

Windows 7 Upgrade fails (or wins?), mine didn't even check for an xp installation, just said clean install and boom it installed. Maybe I was just lucky though, but I've clean reinstalled multiple times from my 'upgrade' disc.

Considering if he installed xp, then it immediately gets wiped as he reinstalles W7 over it, I don't see how its unsafe.

http://techpp.com/2009/11/11/downloa...ownload-links/

3.1Gb

I'd say first just get the upgrade disc, see if its works, if it doesn't, look into obtaining xp.

All the ISOs should be the same, anyway; it's just the key that differs between HP/Pro/Ultimate. Only differences occur with 32-bit/64-bit sizes. IIRC, the 64-bit Win 7 is ~3.6GB when downloaded from Technet.

And no, MS didn't fix that exploit. It's not really an exploit, per se. Starting with Vista, MS gave the opportunity to have a fully functional OS for 30 days, even without a license key. This 'exploit' simply uses that. I suppose you could view it as an exploit if you didn't have an older Windows license from which the upgrade was valid...
