You could upgrade the RAM to 3 or 4gb.
Another option is to install linux on it, linux is known to speed up PC's quite a bit.

What about a new hd? And do you know if it's DDR2 or 3?

Has to be DDR2.

Dell took a very different approach with this desktop replacement, however. I've been looking for a new widescreen multimedia notebook for a long time, in my buying decision I noted how and for what I use my old Toshiba Satellite 1410 and composed a big list of demands and desired specs accordingly .

The good: 17-inch wide-screen display; very good performance with games and 2D business applications; comparatively lightweight; quality speakers; runs Windows XP Media Center; features double-layer DVD burner. It is indeed ddr2. These are the types of laptops where it really is best to buy something new, as you can get low end laptops for ~200 that run circles around it and have windows 7, more HDD space, etc.

If you really want to try to improve such an old laptop, you really have 3 reasonable things you can do. Reinstall OS, install 2 gigs of ddr2 ram (anymore is overkill for this unit), install a 7200 rpm HDD, and dont bloat the system with antiviruses/startup programs.
