[Toms] Micro-Stuttering And GPU Scaling In CrossFire And SLI - Page 4

I agree, I run vsync always and that - while cutting fps - seems to give me a smooth judder-free experience. The one exception seems to be the gamebryo engine.

This article does not come close to my experiences with CFX and SLI.

With GTX 460 SLI, I was plagued by microstutter all the time at 1920x1080, BF:BC2, Metro 2033, Crysis, AvP, Witcher 2, GRID, Trackmania, you name it. It was not smooth, it did not feel like 45-60 fps at all, more like 25-30fps. I was extremely disappointed, because going by benchmarks I should have been able to play most games at their highest settings flawlessly. Not to mention the drivers were giving me headaches, and upgrading past 266.58 was hopeless for gaming, I hear it hasn't been much better the last months either.

Then I tried trifire 6970+6990 on three monitors and the experience was totally different, 40 fps was playable. I ended up buying two 6950s and a U2711, and the difference between CFX and single card is major now compared to 460s SLI. To put the nail in the coffin, AMDs drivers have been completely stable with no issues for me and RadeonPro takes care of any games without crossfire-support, SSAA for older games etc.

When AMD launches a single card able to power 2560x1440 with good framerates, I'll buy it. Crossfire is great, but a single card is loads better if possible.

SLI profiles are user accessible. You can even make your own SLI profiles if you want.

Renaming the exe works on both SLI and Xfire. The problem is if the game is played online, it might not let you due to PB/VAC.

Nvidia Inspector is for overclocking, not adjusting profiles/settings of the driver.

How well does RadeonPro Xfire work on games without Xfire support yet? 50% imrpovement? 80% improvement? 6xxx driver support gives near 100% scaling.

I got about 90-100% scaling in BF3 Alpha on High @ 2560x1440

I have been wondering about this. I have never tried a multi- card setup, but I am considering giving it a go. I currently have one very minor "micro-stutter" that occurs in Battlestations Pacific (my current fav). This is most pronounced when I have my memory settings cranked up as high as I can get them. At these settings I get great benchmarks and my FPS goes up in games, but it causes a tiny micro-stutter when viewing motion action like low level aircraft flight over busy terrain. The games perform the most fluidly with the memory auto-tuned, which the system sets at really low settings. I suspect this has something to do with the interaction between the memory and GPU, such as some synchronization or scaling problem. I think the weakest link in my gaming chain right now is my GPU, with my CPU being a close second. I am considering getting an identical card to my HIS 4670 ($50) and trying crossfire or maybe stepping up to a 6000 series ($100-$150 range) and stay single card. I have been toying with putting the 4670 in my Newegg cart, but this article makes me think that springing for a newer card with new chipset and DDR5 is the way to go.

Mmm.. the only game I've been having any crossfire issues in is DDO a pretty old game that doesn't support it as far as I know. And even then it's occasional stuttering. I just disable crossfire for that since one 6850 is plenty of power for that.

That said, the heat and noise bug me so much that I don't think I'll ever run multi-GPU again. Maybe I'm just being a sissy, but I'll stick to one card just because of that. Next build is gonna be SFF to cut back on the upgrade bug's budget, too.

Well yes if you get to mid range cards for CF is not a good idea in the long run. The only reason people CF is to get more performance and thats the only way.
