4x GSkill 2133 VS 2x GSkill1600 ?

Thread Starter
1- GSkill DDR3-2133 CL9 4GB(2GBx2) 1.65v
2- GSkill Sniper DDR3-1600 CL9 8GB(4GBx2) 1.35v

Which should i get ? (not that if i buy choice1, i will have to get 2x of it, to make a total of 8 GB, which will cost almost double of choice 2

It's for a sandybridge setup on a p67 ASUS maximus iv board
I do massive gaming, GPGPU programming (Cuda, opencl), and 3d rendering.

I'd go with choice 2. It's cheaper and it's well within Intel's rated specs for RAM voltage for Sandy Bridge. Intel's rated max is 1.5V, so that extra 150mV of the first kit makes me a bit on the nervous side - it's obviously designed for Nehalem rather than Sandy Bridge.

That said, it'll probably be fine, but I'm presuming you don't want this system to be down for a while if something like the IMC fries. On a productivity system, better safe than sorry.

are you really sure ?? i heard that the 2133 mhz performs much faster than the 1600, also the rated max voltage was 1.65 i think and they say its sandy bridge compaitable.

Also its listed in the mainboard manual to be compaitable

In theory it performs faster but in real world usage it is faster by a very, VERY small percentage and in some cases slower than the 1600Mhz RAM.

I'd go with the 1600 kit purely because it's a lower voltage.

If you look here:

http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/mem...sandy-bridge/5

The overall score for real word applications is almost exactly the same, no real difference in score.

if you look at the gaming performance here:

http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/mem...sandy-bridge/6

The RAM is almost all exactly the same.

I'd 100% go for the 1600Mhz, the 2133 is just not worth it.

Choice 2. That 1.35V is within Intel's specification of 1.5 on Sandy bridges and also make it very sexily overclockable

If you look in the datasheets for the second generation Core i family CPUs on Intel's website, they state that the maximum safe RAM voltage is 1.5V +/- 5%... for a maximum of 1.575v safe. This is to protect the Integrated Memory Controller on the CPU.

Check the Attachment for the Vddq row, which is what Intel specifies as RAM voltage.

Intel seem to have tweaked their site making finding and downloading spec sheets more difficult than it used to be.
