Anyone know what might cause this problem?

Today I woke up saw that my CPU usage is stuck at 100%, ya I know there's someone else asking similar problem. However, I'm using -SMP 7, so it has been floating around 95% or so, stuck at 100% seems to be wrong. The computer also became extremely slow, i.e. takes 10 seconds to close a window slow.

So I started turning off my my F@H clients one by one and found out the SMP client simply wouldn't go. Ctrl-C, the smp client window closed but still showing up in task manager, tried to end the process there and error windows popping up saying I can't terminate that process. Ram usage remained as if I were folding an bigadv as well though CPU stopped working, temp dropped to idle.

Reboot, restarted all clients, everything's normal. Anyone know what might be going on?

Sounds like the SMP client crashed due to either a bad overclock or just sod's law.

I assume you've run that overclock for months without issue. I'm guessing it was just a glitch, if it happened again or became more frequent i'd be a bit more concerned.

You can always have a look in the event log and check the application and system log for errors as well.

Which work unit was it working on?

I've had a number of stability issues with 2684 and 2685 WUs while folding "-smp 7 -bigadv" that I never had folding on 8 threads. The P6900 units were not as bad, but I still got the occasional lockup or crash.

After a couple of months of jacking with trying to get things stable, I went back to -bigadv folding on 8 threads a week or so ago. Haven't had a lockup or crash since.

Is the GPU client running? I'd check the GPU clocks in Evga Precision or Afterburner; sounds like what happens when the GPU drops to 2D clocks.

That might explain it, was an 2685. Though 6900 has been so far the worst for me though.

Thing was I'm also having 2 460's folding and -smp 7 improves my ppd by something around 15%. Maybe I should switch to -smp 8 if it happened again for 2685.

The GPU clients were running fine as per EOC hourly production stats. Though I indeed observed something similar. There was once one of my 460 was acting up. Whenever I run a client on it FPS takes a dive and cursor starts ghosting (I guess the B-stock evga 460 wasn't as awesome as I thought it were, well I still have like 70 days of warranty...we'll see). However, closing the client solved it that time, today closing the client did no good. Afterburner showed both 460 was at 99% usage@850 Mhz.
