5770 question

Thread Starter
A friend of mine is looking into a new card to buy later on today. Ive told him to go for a 5770, just because its the only AMD card that i know is small so it will fit into his OEM Dell case, but its a pretty powerful card too. I hear its about on par with a a stock 460, so it will handle what he wants it for for sure. Im just sketchy about whether his OEM 350w psu will power a non-ref 5770, i have no idea about the power consumption of red team cards. They really aren't my thing.

Will a Sapphire 5770 be ok on a 350w OEM psu? (i know they dont always deliver 350w either, so its a bit risky)

We need to know the exact psu model, to know if it's any good. Depending on the quality it may or may not be enough.

If I were you, I wouldn't have taken the risk using a 350W PSU.

Is the 6770 the same size? only reason i suggested the 5770 was because of its size.

Ive told him to go into town, He said he'll go to maplin and have a look for some good power supplies. Told him to look for a decent 400w+ Corsair
post #6 of 17
350W is more than enough for a system with a typical modern CPU and a 5770/6770. The 5770/6770 only need a single 6-pin PCIE power connection for a reason- they are pretty efficient. Rated 108W TDP. Combine that with most modern CPUs being around 100W for desktop models, factor in some extra for drives, fans, mobo etc, and you'll never break 300W unless the machine is OCed.

The problem is whether or not that 350W PSU is a "true" 350W PSU and if it is built well enough to sustain loads near label ratings for long periods of time. It may or may not be.

Get the 5770 now 6770.. same thing, but cheaper. also 6770 is OEM only so good luck finding one, and the drivers apprarently don't always work..

But i think a good 350w can run it.

Get one from a good brand and you'll never regret it. I have a 5770 and it is an amazing card.
