GTX 550ti SLI with 550w max power PSU, or something else?

Hey guys, I just upgraded my htpc a little, i3 530, evga p55 sli board, 4gb ddr3 1600, but I have this crappy gt240 video card in there.

That card was fine when all I was doing was watching tv shows/movies on it, but I'd also like to do some light gaming on it. It's connected to a 1080p TV, so that's the res I'd like to play at. It will mainly be for playing PC games I have that are more like console games, that I play with a controller, dirt 2/3, nba 2k11, darksiders, etc.

I don't really have a lot of $ to spend on a GPU right now ~110 (that's what I just sold my old htpc CPU+mobo for).

I could get a gtx550ti right now, and SLI it in a month, or should I just save up for another month or two, and get a faster single GPU solution (maybe a used 480, or hd6870). I think the max total budget for a GPU in this box will be around $200-230.

I only have a crappy OCZ 550w max power PSU to work with, so it's either budget SLI, or single higher end GPU, no get a 570 now, and sli one later. I'm not even sure a 570 is in my budget for what I want this build to be, so no, just get gtx580 and call it a day.

I think the gtx550ti has a low enough TDP that I could get away with SLI on that PSU, what do you guys think?. I don't think I could get away with gtx460 SLI, that was what I was first considering. I also think the gtx 480 may be a little too power hungry for that PSU, any input on that would be helpful too.

Yes, the 550w wouldn't be quite enough for a 480. I would just get a 570 and call it a day, there's nothing it won't do with a respectable frame rate at 1080p.

Sorry but I need to clarify,

a 550ti or a 560ti?

Either way, I've run SLi 570's on a good quality 650w corsair PSU so you should be ok either way.

I was thinking that too. Then I peeked at a few gtx550ti SLI reviews, and found the gtx550ti beat a hd5870 by a few FPS, and a hd6870 by about 10FPS.

550ti, and I'm looking to do this on a 550w OCZ, not my hx750 in sig.

[edit] I guess I should have multi-quoted this, with my last reply, my bad.

Yeah,

I mean, it's going to be pushing it either way unless you go with AMD. But if you can replace the PSU later on then it could help a little. It'll also open up more upgrades etc etc.

Yeah, I guess the single hd6870 option isn't horrible. It should handle the handful of games I want to play, and will probably be a lot cooler than 2 550ti's in SLI. That way I won't be pushing it nearly as much. It's just a secondary PC for the finance to watch TV shows/movies on mainly anyhow. I'll still be doing my main gaming on sig rig.

In which case I would go with the 6850 then, it's a lovely mid range GPU which is more than capable. Also with your low wattage PSU it's the safer option as well

Looking at benchmarks I'm kicking myself for selling my gtx 470 that didn't OC too well last month for <$150. It had the sweet GE twin frozr II cooler on it too. I'm going to end up paying more $ for a hd 6870 that performs about the same as the card I sold, because I thought I didn't need it. darn it.
