Best Spray Paint for painting fans

Thread Starter
hi
i am planning on painting my HAF X fans to red so that they go with the black and red theme. to start i will paint the side panel 200mm fan.
im interested in using some vinyl dye which i have seen someone else use and i like the idea of it going into the plastic instead of just sticking to it. the one i have found requires no primer, the surface just needs to be cleaned.
this is the spray paint i have in mind:

http://www.diy.com/diy/jsp/bq/nav.jsp?action=detail&fh_secondid=9254135&fh_locat ion=//catalog01/en_GB/categories%3C{9372013}/categories%3C{9372030}/categories%3C{9372123}/specificationsProductType=spray_paints

what do you guys think of it?

this is also my first time doing this, do you guys have any tips or tricks from your experiences?

i will be painting the whole fan most likely, i am not too fussed about the shroud being black although i may decide to do so

thank you

I have bought that plasti-kote now, its the same as that rust-oleum I think
I asked the person in B&Q and said it shouldn't require any primer but may be a few coats
post #4 of 14
I highly RECOMMEND primer!
plastic constantly releases gas and if there isn't a proper primer it can slowly cause small bubbles that will lead to chipping and peeling. This is why you should a use plastic specific primer.

Or at least that's the sales pitch... lol

truth is you will have better Adhesion with a primer.
Simply put, the paint will stick better.

Yh I have done 2 coats on my haf x's 200mm side panels fan duct and one of the front grills, looks awesome
Nice to know from someones experience
How long did u wait between each coat and how many coats did you do?
I'm doing 2 coats and left 1 hours till I did the second
post #8 of 14
lol i only did one coat cus i wasnt bothered. mt gt's look fine tbh but if i was to do it properli i wud sand it a bit, primer it and leave about 1-2 hours between each coat.the thing about plasti kote is that it looks dry but its actualli not so be careful about that.

I'm going to give it over 24 hourd to dry
Enough?
Yh I just washed the parts then dried them properly with a paper towel and a littlt bit of a hair dryer, let them cool and go back to normal then spray
If its fone without it then no need I guessN I'm going to try on tose parts mentioned to see how it comes out, plasti-kote is designed for no primer, only recommended for bare surfaces I think it says on their website
post #10 of 14
Any paint that contains acetone, I have used krylon fusion with great success and no primer needed.
