Compact DSLR Cameras

Thread Starter
Hi guys,

I'm a totale newb when it comes to photography but i've been reading a bit about DSLR and Micro four/third and such. I wanted to buy a camera this holiday season for family pictures and maybe learn a little bit about professional photography. Since this is my first camera i dont want those big bulky Canon DSLR with 10 different lenses and a backpack full of gears.

I saw an article on Gizmodo.com about the Sony Nex 5 Camera. http://store.sony.com/webapp/wcs/sto...entifier=S_NEX

It says that the quality of the photos are up to par with regular DSLR cameras but the size is compact like a normal digital camera. Do you guys think this will be sufficient for my needs? Are there any other type like this out there for a comparision?

I would appreciate any inputs for this post cause I am seriously thinking of getting one soon.

Thanks for checking out this thread.

Here you go.

It really depends on what your planning on shooting.

Thanks for the link. Those Leica are very nice but too expensive. I mostly will shoot family photos and maybe a bit of outdoor scenery like desktop wallpapers. Maybe some modeling pictures and headshots. Between Lumix, Olympus and the Sony i mentioned above, which is good?

sony has a larger sensor while the olympus has better ergonomics, smaller size and more lenses. personally i would go with the sony since it has a larger sensor.

As a 4/3 and micro 4/3 user (epl1 and soon to be e-p3), compared to the nex, I will never change to one. The larger sensor debate between m43 and nex is far to overrated, while the nex has higher ISO quality and a bit more dynamic range, they do not have many great lenses, and the ones that are good, arent compact by any means!

I have the 20mm panasonic pancake f1.7 and it is my go to lens for bar nights, around town/street shooting, Rumor has it panasonic is coming out with a collapsible telephoto lens, much like the collapsible olympus 9-18 wide angle and 14-42 kit lens, you can adapt the regular 4/3 lenses to it also if you want some larger quality glass (much like sony can with there mount also)

I can't say i've ever been limited by m4/3 iso unless it was in a really dark pub.

lol i'm only 5'5 so i dont think it'll be a problem. but i just came across another article about Sony releasing a newer version of Nex

http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/24/s...er-1199-price/

What do you think? The price is pretty steep though.

its a pretty impressive (on paper atleast) ILC. but for a beginner it might be a waste of money, better to pick up a nex-5n or nex-c3.
