CF currently sucks!

Ok, I got my 2nd 6950 recently, but only hooked it up today.

Here is my dilemma! I am noticing a lot of bugs when CF is enabled, and a lot of performance DECREASES in supposedly crossfire enabled games such as GTA IV.

I have tried GTA IV maxed out on my computer (check rig specs below)

Heres how it all went with 2 6950s: Launched GTA, noticed that GTA was restricting mem usage to 202 (or so) when i had 4096 available, so i put in -norestrictions -nomemrestrict in command line, and fired it up again. This time it let me kick up all the settings to max so it used ~1200/4096, which was still in the red, but should be still ok if using one card. All was smooth 40+ until i exited the house, and the fps dropped to about 2fps.

I exited, turned off crossfire in CCC, turned off -norestrictions -nomemrestrict since it caused crashes on launch and kicked up all the settings back to max without a problem this time- all in green. Load safe house, again 40+ but this time when i left the safehouse, i was still pushing 20-30 with occasional spikes.

I was also told that my PSU (Thermaltake TR2 RX) does not support SLi or CF even though it is modular.

It being modular does not mean is should support cfx/sli. If the PSU manufacturer says that it doesn't support it then you'll prolly want a different PSU.

So you are saying that this is 120% my PSUs fault?

Follow up question:

DID I FRY ANYTHING?! D:

EDIT: Exactly, agree with sectornine i always thought it was just for marketing reasons they had SLi stickers on the front.

How can a PSU not support CF or SLi? If it has the power adapters, it can do it. There is nothing special with the power to the graphics cards when in this mode, and quite frankly, the SLi and Crossfire ready PSU's is just marketing saying they have more than one PCI-E power plug.

If your PSU puts out the necessary power, you should be fine. That said, I've always been weary of the Thermaltake TR2's.

Have you tried any other games?

Indeed I have, and it did run fine, just as fine as it does now on a single 6950.

Your cards only have 2 GB RAM available, try lowering the memrestriction.

i hear alot of trouble with crossfire in gta4 that is all since its so unoptimised , i also go to 2 fps when i exit the safe house but after that i dont get any spikes.

EDIT: for some reason downloading windows live stopped spikes for me just a suggestion.
