core0 is 37c when core1 is 30c?

Thread Starter
I have a C2D E7500, without any OC'ing idle temps reads as core0 = 37c, core1 = ~33c (room temp= 25c~30c). I've used; RealTemp, HWmonitor, SpeedFan and iStat on OS X lion. Every software indicates core0 idle temp as 37c. what would be the problem here? I've tried changing thermal paste and properly installing the cpu cooler... but nothing have changed

BUT, when temp is going up, both stands in same level...

idle < - > 100% load

This is due to the purpose of the sensors. These sensors were designed with one purpose: to make the CPU throttle itself down or turn itself off if the temperature reaches the Tj. Max which is 100°C. This means that the idle temps are never accurate. Worse yet, these sensors are at their most inaccurate at temps below 50°C. As the temps get closer and closer to 100°C, the sensors become more and more accurate. I think that once the temps reach the 90s, the sensors become 100% accurate.

Fortunately, these sensors are good enough for our purposes even though it's still a very crude way to measure our core temps.

So don't worry about your idle temps unless you start seeing idle temps that exceed like 40 or 45°C.

You're very welcome!

By the way, if you ever decide to upgrade to either Sandy Bridge or Ivy Bridge, then I have good news: Intel tried to make the sensors far more usable as thermometers for people like us. I mean, it seems like they redesigned the sensors so that they're much more accurate at all temperatures instead of just higher ones.

and then with Sandy Bridge, you run into a different issue... (or at least, I have) Core0 can be up to 10C cooler than the rest, which drives me nuts
