When gpu is 99% usage the game runs like crap (20-35 fps)

When the gpu usage is 60-70% the game runs perfect 55 fps

and it happens randomly

Why is this

I don't know how.. L3 doesn't help that much in IV and I've got an extra core. On medium I get lowmid 20s on the benchmark and my gpu is a few times faster. And IIRC my gpu runs at max and cpu is 90-100% on all cores.

Actually from low to high there's only a 10fps difference... so I run at mid while high and it all blurs by.

You should get much better numbers then that. My girlfriend had a Phenom I X3 8650 and a 8800 GTS and got much better numbers then that. Could be your hard drive. I just upgraded from a Raptor and a Spinpoint F3 to a SSD, and the difference is night and day on how GTAIV plays. No more stuttering at all.

Does anyone know what you would need to have GTA-4 run at its best. Smooth running and nice look ?

AMD FX 6100 @ 3.9ghz
ATI HD 5670 1gb
8 gb DDR3

The game is ruff even with this set up. so i dont know how far to take it. lol
The only thing i can think of making it lag , is the game is not installed on the primary SSD, its installed on a 7200rpm HDD . i didnt think that would be an issue
Any help out there ?

I used SteamMover to move the game from the HDD to the SSD and didn't notice any major difference, the game still runs like a dog sometimes. Sometimes it's because the CPU is being maxed out, a faster CPU will help, sometimes it's just because the game is not optmized. I do get playable performance in the 30's fps most of the time though, and the game does handle low fps fairly well.

In all honesty, both your CPU and GPU would have to be upgraded to get better performance. I think it can only use 4 cores anyway, so it won't even take advantage of your CPUs architecture. You might try overclocking it some more. As to the GPU, you could get a second hand 5770, that has twice the number of cores as your HD 5670. Ideally you should get an HD 6850 or a GTX 460 1GB. Or you can get one of the new Radeon HD 7800 series cards that will go on sale next week, but those are more expensive and on a different performance bracket.

Thanks for the info.

Im gonna go grab a 6770 1gb card tomorrow to swap out for my 5670.
Unless i can find a card to join up with my 5670. not sure if my card supports that. i dont think it does. OR i can find the one you mentioned for a decent price.
the 6850

But as for the processor. i can clock it @ 4.4 ghz with no prob.
I will see how that handles. the 4.4 clock with the 6770 graphics card. or 6850

I also noticed that the game was running in XP sp3 mode. I changed it to Win 7 mode. and notice a good change.
The lag is only 10% now with the game settings half way up across the board.

Thanks again for the comment, i had a feeling the graphics card was holding me up.
