Pc Upgrade - £300 to spend

Thread Starter

Hey up,

Its only 30 days now till I get my hands on more of that lovely student loan that we either loath or love. Anyway, since BF3 looks so awesome and I am getting fed up of playing games on medium (like Fallout NV or HOMM or whatever). I will have around £300 spare to spend on upgrading my PC and wondered if this was a good plan of action and wanted some advice. This is my current setup:

-------------
Thermaltake Element G Case
AMD 7750 overclocked to 3.1 Ghz (from 2.7)
TA790GX 128M Motherboard
XFX 4830 512Mb Graphics card
4 Gb Generic Ram (DDR2 something or other)
OZC Modular 600w Power Supply
&
24 '' Dell 1080p Screen
-------------

Plan is to upgrade the MB, Ram and CPU as well as a brand spanking new graphics card to the following:

Asus M5A97 - £80
click
Phenom II 955 BE - £90
Click
Corsair Vengeance 8 Gb - £50

This would leave me with around £80 left. Next plan would be to get all the replaced old parts, add them to a generic case and some PSU, hook up an optical drive and add in my spare 500gb HDD and sell that. Depending on what amount of money I can get for it (btw, what would you think a PC like that would be worth as I have no idea how much to sell it for!) I plan to either get a 6870 or a 6950.

This a decent plan? Would you recommend something else with £300 at all?

Thanks

I like your plan, Those components are slightly cheaper on scan.co.uk just so you know.

Asus M5A97 AMD 970 AM3+ £73.16 Inc VAT

Phenom II x4 955 BE £85.91 Inc VAT

Corsair Memory Vengeance Black 8GB £46.94 Inc VAT

£206 Inc VAT

Can consider paying a little more for a decent crossfire board if possible.

Ah thanks Jagz. Any idea what the PC for sale would be worth? Best to go around with a price rather than "make me an offer".

Awesome savings are awesome! Cheers for that. What board would you have in mind? Although if I did manage to get a 6950 I can't see me crossfiring it. Tis nice to have the option though.

@ Driftingforlife: Would an unlocked 6950 max out a 955 then?

Well. Whats better, getting a 955 with a 6950 OR a 2500K with a 6870?

That's a great question. I don't doubt that the 2500k/6870 would get scary scary close to a 955 w/ a 6950. 2500k's just so damn powerful. Plus the 2500k will last you much longer.

If you can swing it maybe you should but as you see, It's £162.18 Inc VAT on scan. Your current budget doesn't pertain to a 2500k build that great but if you can make it work, great success.

The gpu makes more difference in gaming and an OCed 955 will not bottleneck the 6950. Plus a 6950 @ 6970 clocks performs nearly the same and this is something the 6870 could never do.
