Buy Win7 or upgrade from XP? - Page 2

Fresh install from OEM disk. Tried to do an "upgrade" install on my dad's older computer (Pentium D with 4gb of RAM for some reason) and I ran into issues with the install- it kept hanging at about 65%. It may have been due to the computer being an OEM (Acer), but I ended up just reformatting and putting the OEM version on. No hassles.

If you google search it there is a registry hack that will allow you to do a clean install with upgrade media (xp wouldn't even be involved). That's what I'd do.

Get the Windows 7 Upgrade and download the appropriate .ISO of the version of Windows 7 that you need and do a fresh install.

After you've installed it, use the Serial Key from the Win 7 Upgrade and slap it on your newly installed OS.

I bought the "Upgrade family pack" and have it on three PCs!

All you have to do is make sure the drive you're installing to, has had a version of Windows on it before!
Then you just do a fresh install!

When doing the install. Don't put in the CD key! Do it once you get in Windows

Oh dude...this would be awesome. I assume it's legit? How would I do it?

Sorry, I'm just used to throwing in a disk and going.

Personally, I'd prefer the cheapest route, but I'm not sure if it's quite the same as a clean install.

Thanks in advance as always.
A clean install is best no matter what other people say. This can be done using an upgrade CD just don't put the CD key in.

I did answer this in another post here the link to that post:

http://www.overclock.net/14674852-post13.html

If you follow this you can use the upgrade CD key after the install first time without double install
