What sub and sound card to go with BX5a's? - Page 2

Thanks for the feedback. I should have pointed out in my first post that i would prefer an internal sound card and i want to try and keep the price of everything below $700. I also dont really need a super loud sub. The sub that is in my logitech z-530 is loud enough for me. That's why i'm leaning towards an 8 or 10in one.

$700 gives you a lot of room to work with. I currently have a PSW10 in my computer setup. I am quite happy with it, especially for the price. It isnt the best sub on the market but it does fairly well as a computer sub. If you need something that will fill up a larger room though I would look somewhere else because the PSW10 is not meant to push out a ton of power (see 50-100W power level.) I cant give a whole lot of input on other subs but I have heard really good things about Dayton and Audioengine.

For speakers the BX5a's are a solid set. If you want to spend a little more money on a good 2.0 set take a look at Audioengine or HiVi Swans. I have a set of Swan D2.1se's that I picked up at Audiogon.com for $350 and I couldnt be happier, they are amazing speakers (a big large if you dont have a lot of room though.) Keep in mind that a lot of higher end speakers like mine are not powered and require a separate amplifier. (I personally use a receiver as a amp and a sound card.)

For a sound card you will be happy with most of the Xonar line. Both the STX and D2X are great cards for what you are looking at. That being said, if you need to skim a little off the price you wont be dissapointed with DX.

Hope this helps.

You should consider listening to any speaker before you buy those. As for me, Bx5 sounds very poorly on bass so i would recommend 12" sub to fill that gap fully.
As of overall picture, need in sub is defined by what you intend to do with set-up. Many entrance level speakers will fulfill your need of bass in music, and you'll end up streaming your audio past windows kernel to hear clear and pure sound of song.
On a side note, you'll find lots of post that will point you to fact that soundcard is gimmick made to suck some more money from you, but then again, not everyone can afford Hi-Fi stereo just for music

I have but i don't have enough room. Once i get out of my parents house i'm going to put together a nice setup for my TV with floor standing speakers and whatnot. I'm just looking for a smallish setup for my computer right now.

Well if u are considering the speakers in title then $$ is not super tight so maybe a small T-Amp and highly regarded musical bookshelf currently selling at a bargain? Does not take up much more space than active speakers IMO hehe

The above still leaves him with $300 to work with for a sound card and subwoofer though. He could EASILY do the above, add a good sub, and a good sound card, and still be under budget.

Honestly, I don't like adding a sub to powered speakers. You have no control over the volume at that point...just Windows. That's why I have the DTA-100a myself, its easier to upgrade.

Ya i guess the active/powered monitors are attractive as a boxed/ready made solution but i too favour going amp+passive

If you're using active monitors, then you'll have to split the SIGNAL line (3.5mm to RCA) to give the subwoofer a signal. As such, both the speakers and the subwoofer would have independant volume controls of each other. You turn the speakers up, the sub won't go up with it.

So to compensate, you'd have to set the volume levels to where you like at max volume, and then use Windows to control the volume from there, so the speakers and sub go up and down at the same time.

If you went with a mini amp + bookshelfs, you wouldn't have this problem. You could just wire the subwoofer up to the outputs of the mini amp.

So if i control the volume through windows i wouldn't have that problem right? That's the way i change volume now. I just use the buttons on my keyboard.
