GTX 570 and HD 6950 Reference Preferred or Non?

Thread Starter
I'm looking to buy a GTX 570 or HD 6950 (2GB), and I'm wondering whether a reference card is preferred for either or both. If not, why?

Thank you.

I always by reference since you have software voltage control and aftermarket cooling options (waterblocks, accelero, t-rad etc.) Plus they usually work better in close (card-to-card) SLi or CFX as a lot of non-ref cards don't have the "blower" squirrel cage fan design useful for this.

If you get a GTX 570, go non-ref though since the reference cards VRM sometimes fails when overclocking.

for the 570, I do not recommend the reference version because of the bad VRMs. A lot of people have had problems with them so I don't recommend it. If you want a 570 get a non reference card like the asus 570 directcu II or the msi 570 TFIII power edition with the non reference PCB because they have stronger VRMs

the reference 2gb 6950 can unlock to a 6970 with a simple bios change. the reference 6950s are loud and hot though so make sure you have adequate cooling if you go for one of those. A non reference 6950 doesn't unlock (some do but you have to be really lucky) but typically has better cooling.

the 570 is the faster of the two cards but an unlocked 6950 reference card will perform at about the same level as the 570.

Good luck finding 6950 reference to unlock. I don't understand why people still even talk about unlocking them any more. 7000s will be out before you find one that can be unlock.

msi 570 TFIII power edition will rock with 1080 Resolution. They are on sale at amazon.com for 314.99 free shipping right now to.
