Budget build for coworker (APU based)

Thread Starter
Hey all,
A coworker of mine is on a very tight budget and needs his first computer with no need for gaming. He has given me a budget of $500 but I might as well knock it down to $400 right now as a copy of Win7 is needed. At this budget I feel an APU is the only way to go.

Here are my first thoughts.

Antec High Current Gamer 400w -$40
Seagate Barracuda 1TB 7200rpm -$55
Antec 300 -$40 with NCIX pricematch
RipjawsX 2x4GB -$44
Asus E35M1-M Pro -$122 with CenDirect pricematch

Also I will use some $20 optical drive.

Total: $321 + $100 for Win7

Can I honestly do any better with this budget? I would like to be under budget if possible as I know money is tight for him. I'd also like to stick to parts available at Memory Express as it just keeps things simple.

Thanks for your help again OCN.

No offense but the E-350 is junk for gaming- at that price you're better off getting a laptop and hooking it up to a monitor. Probably would be better for gaming, and faster orverall. I'll see what else I can come up with regarding a desktop.

EDIT: Newegg.ca setup: $135 for AMD Athlon x3 445 and Foxconn 880G mATX board. +$10 for about 5x the CPU power, and about the same gpu(guessing). Throw in any GT 430 etc., and it'll game "good enough".

Could get the CPU at Memoryexpress but the board is $30 cheaper at newegg.

Llano build is $200 for CPU and board so IMO its better to go AM3 and a cheap video card.

I second this.

Grab this board+APU combo instead:
http://www.memoryexpress.com/Product...MUD2H(ME).aspx

You should also grab everything you can at memoryexpress. You can make a local pick up and do price matching on everything. It will save the shipping costs.

I'll edit in my suggestion in a sec.

Sorry I forgot to mention... Gaming is absolutely no concern. Office programs and surfing only. I'll edit the OP.

looks decent. I would exchange that Seagate for a Samsung F3 1tb. Much better for the money.

If you're going the Llano route (which I would suggest ) do not get some slow ass 4gb sticks, get a nice 2133 4gb kit, price should be similar, performance much better

Can recommend the F3-17000CL9D's, have worked well on all A75 boards I've tested and OC well, not that you'll be doing that.

Is there a practical use for Llano if the extent of what you do is word processing though?

It's sort of hard to beat $40 for the case though. Small form factor isn't necessarily cheaper. Any recommendations?

More and more applications are using GPU acceleration, even your browser to load e-mail or youtube. On the side note, Windows 7 also, although I'm not entirely sure of all of such, uses GPU acceleration for certain things as well, one being the GUI.

Grabbing a GPU that can handle HD content should be sufficient to being able to do pretty much everything this guy is going to be using the rig for. The e-350 is quite on the slow end for even basic tasks if it is anything like it's competition (which, if I remember correctly, sure looks like it).

This is what I'd recommend. You must price match everything through shotbot.ca, and, you must grab the M.I.R.

Code:
Item/ComponentPriceMatchedActual Cost
WD Black 500GB56.9955.4955.115

Grand Total:$623.61$575.32$563.24
with Rebate$548.243625
That also includes 5% tax. It, however, does not include a monitor and peripherals. Just 50 dollars over your limit. You can also drop the GPU and use the embedded or find a GPU that is on clearance.

Sorta seems like Llano is the way to go. But this build skimps on the memory, which is a HUGE factor for Llano.

I was looking into something similar few days ago.

Processor: Semptron 145 (unlock to 2 core)
Motherboard: ECS Socket AM3+ A880LM-M(1.0)
GFX: -
CPU cooler: Hyper 101
Case: Hedy miditower
PSU: Fortron 400W 85+
RAM:2x4gb ddr3 valueram
HD: Samsung Spinpoint F3 HD502HJ 500GB

In local prices it's all togehter about 190 euros (that is with 20% VAT). This should be quite enough for net and word processing. There is no optical drive, but if it's needed just throw in some cheap 10$ one. And ofc CPU is as weak as they come but as Semptrons unlock almost always I have heard it should be good enough. If there is funds to spare you can throw into a mix some GFX card that can Hybrid Crossfire with the onboard chip. If you get it for almost free that is - the price difference with stronger cards might be neglible.

Now - does that 400$ include also a monitor, mouse, keyboard and other such stuff or only the box with processor in it ?
