MSI 870-G45-Series Owners Thread/Club

Thread Starter
I was looking around to find out that such an awesome motherboard did not have a club on OCN. So, I started one! Let's see how far it gets!!!

The MSI 870-G45 is a socket AM3 motherboard with phase change features, SATA 6GB/s capabilities, and crossfire support. This board is well known for it's "Military Class Concept". Some other features include OCGenie, unlocked CPU core, and a mobo firmware-OS. OCGenie is a BIOS-controlled application which can overclock your CPU automatically without harming the CPU. This can be very helpful for new overclockers and/or overclockers with little experience. I (personally) would not use this feature since it is possible to get higher and faster CPU clocks without using this. Unlocked core capabilities allow for users to open up one or two "hidden" cores in your cpu.

REMEMBER TO COOL YOUR VRMs/MOSFETS!!... As this board is known for a lot of VRM/MOSFET failures, it is highly recommended to buy some MOSFET heatsinks to keep the VRM/MOSFET cooler than they usually run at. As this will only help the chance of failure go down, it will not completely eliminate the chance. So be wise when choosing to cool your MOSFETs on this board!

Please Read the FAQ before posting!

You triple posted your club tongue.gif (corrected it for you)

I hate to trample but as always I would remind users to be very wary if running high TDP processors (i.e. 125W Phenom II x4/x6), as the 4+1 phase VRM on this board has problems and is known for failure.

Okay, thanks xd!

BTW, I am considering purchasing some mosfet aftermarket coolers after I saw your posts regarding this!

I wouldn't count on those, the issues appear to be more rampant than just lack of cooling...
As the 870-G45 and related boards have the highest failure rate out of all the failure-worthy MSI boards, I have had the opportunity to examine cause of failure. The causes may be:
  • Extremely hot running VRMs with high TDP processor (although this can be solved with cooling, this board has been known to fail or run hot WITH cooling installed)
  • Improperly sized high side/low side transistors (too low amperage capability)
  • Improperly sized driver (it is another transistor as opposed to proper driver chip on this board - too low amperage capability)
  • No VRM protection of any sort to prevent against failure
This is just info I'm getting from some other 870A-G45 owners. I could point you to some usernames if you want.

Anyone tried to run the sli hack on this motherboard with 2 nvidia video cards in sli? I am trying this now. But no performance seems to be gained. I just wanted to know maybe my sli bridge is broken. Or even 2 ati cards in crossfire how did it perform? any performance degrade? if anyone has done it. I have had this MB for 3 months now, and have not had any problems with it. Looking forward to hearing back for some of you.

embarrassing...??? What's bad about this motherboard? Really, fire away!!!

It gets a 4 star review on both amazon, and newegg....

EDIT: Wait, you own the board, so it wouldn't BE embarrassing, it must ALREADY be embarrassing to you, correct me if I'm wrong................
