It gets a 4 star review on both amazon, and newegg....

EDIT: Wait, you own the board, so it wouldn't BE embarrassing, it must ALREADY be embarrassing to you, correct me if I'm wrong................

Its actually not a bad board for a regular joe that doesn't overclock, and it makes a great server board that I hide away in the corner of my room. I just wouldn't trust it with its 4+1 VRM setup with any settings cranked up.

I am currently just running a radeon 4350, but in a couple months, I will be running crossfire 6870s biggrin.gif!!!!!

I'm running a 4.2Ghz overclock on here, with 1.522v. It's very stable. I might get a heatsink and a 40mm fan on the VRM/MOSFETs soon...

I'll add you but if possible, could you either take a picture of it and post it here, or give me your CPUZ validation link soon.

So I've read these motherboards have quite a bit of problems but the main ones are the mosfets.

I've looked around for something like this, mosfet heatsinks
mosfetheatsinks.jpg

Anyone has suggestions or some personal experience they would like to share. biggrin.gif

My goal is to run a Phenom II x4 955 at 3.8GHz

Please take me under your wing and teach me well! applaud.gif

^ I believe the problem hasn't really anything to do with the cooling, it more-so has to do with the rated amps of the transistors (particularly the 3rd transistor chip, which in a method of lowering cost and quality acts as the MOSFET driver, and is probably improperly sized as a number of the failures involve one of these particular chips) in combination with the low phase count, causing extremely high heat regardless of cooling.

I know a user here (amd-dude, talk to him) who gets VRM temps well over the 100Cs when his Phenom II x2 is unlocked into a 125W x4, despite that he has some MOS-C1 sinks installed which should radiate heat much more efficiently; he runs his daily OC with a less power-intensive dual or triple core config.

The actual VRM failures, fires, blow-ups, etc. (of which many have been recorded) probably have more to do with the combination of that and the total lack of VRM protection. I have done extensive study on this particular motherboard, as this motherboard and direct variants of it (i.e. 870A-G54) have the highest VRM fail rate compared to other failure-prone motherboards; you can view the list in my "About VRMs & MOSFETs" thread (click the link in sig). There have been failures that have happened with overclock, but numerous have happened at stock speeds on some processors. Even a moderate overclock poses high risk.

The problems with MSI AMD boards and VRMs have been present since the MSI K9A2 series (the K9A2 CF was probably the first known failure-prone MSI AMD board), believed to have been caused by the use of NIKOS transistors with low amperage supply-by-temperature ratings, as opposed to quality INFINEON transistors on the K9A2 Platinum. Problems are also believed to be caused by the regular use of a third lower-cost transistor acting as the MOSFET driver, in place of proper DRIVER chips. Other design faults, specifically loose-mounted heatsinks (on some models) and the total lack of any VRM protection method across all (or most) recent MSI boards, i.e. CPU throttling or shutdown (usually confirmed present in boards by other brands such as ASUS and ASRock), cause a high VRM failure rate/risk. Some of the higher end boards have VRM design problems of their own, unfortunately for MSI. There has also been limited presence of VRM problems on MSI boards on Intel platforms, particularly some LGA775 platform boards.

Basically, try to avoid using this board with any higher wattage chip (i.e. 125W TDP) as much as possible.

Just sharing what I know.

Thank you for your advice, I do plan to upgrade the board but as of right now I'm testing to see how well the mono works with the 125W quad core. I wonder how some guys run the higher wattage computers on these boards with no problems so far, there must be a way!

-Puts detective cap on-

I believe, with all my might that aiding the mosfets with heatsinks would help! biggrin.gif
