Turning 19 in two days haha.
I used to work for a Lexus dealership but that hasn't been working out. They couldn't afford to pay me since business has been slow.

Hey all,

I've read through this post a lil while back and just wanted to ask something here about the latest BIOS update for this series of MB's. The latest BIOS update says "ADD NTC protection function". Is anyone able to clarify this a little bit for me? As far as I can tell it has to do with temperature increases and possibly to do with MOSFETs. So with this added function will it allow overclocking on this series of boards safer? Particularly with a 95w CPU.

Thanks!

^ Oh, I certainly hope so.

It seems that MSI is finally taking notice of the VRM failure issues plaguing low end boards like this one.  Look at the "note 2" sentence on the 870A-G54-FX motherboard page: they are now discouraging you from overclocking due to power specifications.

I hope this certainly means better boards for the next generation.

Hmmm, never heard of it... If that what it specifies, then give it a go! Nothing can go wrong...

How tragically this might sound, my own MSI 870S-G56 has died due to VRM failure... Im not kidding frown.gif. Even though I will be purchasing an Asus mobo to replace this, I will still manage and run this club. I still do think that this motherboard is very good for the price, but when we say to use caution, especially when overclocking, we really do mean it... I was here to witness it.

Yeah with any luck they will not cheap out on their MOSFETs with their next generation. This is the first MSI board I have ever owned, I have always had ASUS and I once had a Gigabyte. I was short on funds when I purchased this board and never researched it enough. But I may have to replace it to achieve what I would like. I am also debating about holding off until I can swing getting either an i5 2500 and mobo, or get an AM3+ board for now and possibly get a bulldozer chip a little later.

@ Jetboy Sorry to hear about your board. You had a pretty hefty overclock though didn't you and on a 125w cpu? I am debating trying a modest overclock on my x4 945 95w with the added NTC protection, say <3500mhz. But I really don't want to end up damaging more then my mobo, that's my only real concern. If I burn out the mobo then no big deal, I have a backup am2+ that I could use until I could get a new am3/am3+ board. But to lose RAM, CPU, GPU, etc. that would not be a good scene! lol

But do we even know that NTC protection protects against VRM failure?  At one point someone is going to have to step up and take the risk and see.
