m-audio av 40 vs krk rp5 g2

Thread Starter
I'm trying to decide between these two right now

mainly for music listening (usually flac) and I also produce music as well

I'm going to use them on my desk next to my laptop

but I also want to use them for small parties in my apartment

I can get a used av 40 for $90

or

I can go all out and pay around $300 for a new pair of krk rp5 g2s

I'm just wondering if the rp5s are worth the extra $200 bux?

Not in the same weight class but also consider Swan D1080MkII08?
http://www.theaudioinsider.com/product_info.php?loudspeakers=swan-active-desktop-sound&p=swan-d1080mkii08&cPath=21_24&products_id=161
Are amp + passive bookshelf not fine as well?

I think for $300 I'd look at the M-Audio CX5 instead of the KRKs:

I wouldn't buy any set of those M-Audio AVxx speakers used. As it is, they have a nasty habit of dying as soon as they go out of warranty. Could be someone just trying to unload theirs before it happens.

I bought my AV40's used and they are perfectly fine. For $300, I would get the KRK's though. I will upgrade later to KRK when I have the funds. Just make sure you have a great DAC (The Claro is great).

Well options aplenty if $$ less an object obviously but for budget active speakers i would also seriously consider Edifier 1900T/Microlab Solo 6C hehe

Just thought I'd share my experience w/ some speakers...

Had some Klipsch 4.1's for a LONG time. Blissful ignorance, right? biggrin.gif

Got rid of them because I always reached for my headphones anyway. Recently went to Fry's and picked up some Creative Gigaworks T40 series II's. Those were awful. frown.gif Swapped those out for some AV40's. Much better, but now I had enough of a taste to start researching. Went to Guitar Center and auditioned the KRK RP5's and RP6's.

In a nutshell, the RP5's got a bit confused on Daft Punk's Tron album. The song Derezzed highlighted the wider sweet spot of the RP6's. The bass line comes back about midway through the song and the 6's simply sounded better. The low end had more impact and came through tighter, more controlled. The rest of the instruments maintained their presence more clearly than the 5's.

I've had them @ home for a week now and am more than satisfied w/ their low end. It's enough to feel. Some headfiers suggested a set of the Auralex Mopads and those came in today. I've noticed:

1. tighter low/mid
2. increase in overall accuracy
3. soundstage sort of "floats" instead of being grounded

At first the lack of front volume, power buttons, and ridiculous size put me off. I nearly ordered the Swan M50W's. But at this point, I could care less. I use a surge protector for their on/off, the pc for volume, and the pads/front bass ports/wide sweet spot let me put them way in the corners of my desk.
