Mineral Oil build for School Project

Well I go to college and were looking to possibly build a Mineral Cooled machine to show off the program to possible future students, but were just starting to think up some and well this topic came up.

What we need is a general area to start looking into this, and start our planning stages.

Any ideas or routes we should go when building for this?

Suggestions would be great as we plan on really looking into this.

Rather than doing Mineral oil, I'd do de-ionized water. It's clearer, still non-conductive, and they you could use the pump/filter from a normal aquarium to keep it clean.

You'll basically need an aquarium tank, and then a pump+radiator to keep the water temp in the tank down.

distilled water is the same as de-ionized water, right? that'd be a great idea since mieral oil doesn't transfer heat as well as water, me think

Distilled is potentially even better than de-ionized water. However, water is much easier to contaminate and make conductive than mineral oil. In fact, the components themselves could start to leach out metals into the water, and you have a short... It would be an interesting experiment, but I wouldn't put modern components into it.

Mineral oil should be much safer, if not as efficient.

Distilled/deionized water is a bad idea. Water is a terrific solvent; it will dissolve enough of your motherboard components to become conductive rather quickly.

If you are serious about the mineral oil Idea I can give you a link to pre built atx aquarium kits

If you dont want to but through them they do provide quality advice for a build.

My school did the same thing last year, We did this by using an old P4 775 system that was laying in the "shop". We got the mineral Oil from one of the local electric companies in town. and a fish tank from wal-mart.
