Quick Mem Question

Thread Starter
This is probably the most newbie sounding post ever but please advise.

I had 4gb OCZ2P800R21G (4x1Gb)

One stick has died and until i upgrade i want to fill the empty slot (to get by basically)

My question is (or are)
a) does it have to be the exact same memory i put in (ie model number etc.)
b) does it have to be a 1gb stick or can I put in something else (like a 2gb or 4gb. Not sure if thats even possible)
c) should i be that embarrassed about having to post this question

Thanks in advance

Dude we all started with the same questions

It's advisable to always use identical memory in all your slots. No memory chips are the same unless they come sold in a kit.
I have mixed memory before and it worked, but as I said it's not advisable, especially if you overclock or plan to sometime.
If you can, save some bucks and upgrade your mobo. Then you can use DDR3 and it's cheaper than DDR2!

a, No, but if you get a higher quality ram then you will be limited by your other ram. Ex; buy 1066mhz stick and pair with 800 mhz kit, your 1066 stick is limited by what the other ram can do.

b, It can be any capacity but personally I would replace it with another 1 gb stick

c, Not at all

Cheers.

Was going to upgrade but after posting on here was advised that the pro version of the board would be batter and the 2500k i5 would be better than 2500 i5. This of course put the cost up and i decided to hold on (until next payday) and get both mentioned.

This was just a quick fix in the meantime but i must admit i did expect the response of not mixing RAM.

For example i was looking at
OCZ REF: OCZ2P800LP1G

Like i say just for now to get me by.

I can't wait to get it to be honest. I was tempted to just go for the LE version of the board and do it now, however, to be sensible and to futurproof the pro is required.

Roll on NEXT payday
