[NwAvGuy / DIYAudio] The O2 'Objective 2' headphone amplifier - Page 4

The only reason head-fi is a bit squeamish about the issue is because the maker of the objective 2 was banned from there a few weeks ago. There was a very stupid quarrel involving egos and an admin who was a product spokesperson. Nwavguy(the maker) dug into the product, correctly calling attention to a potential danger in the circuitery of an amp which could have resulted in electrocution. The makers of the product refused to accept the evidence put forth by nwavguy and as a result a few days later after the whole thing erupted because a few more people found out about it and had test results to back nwavguy up, he was banned.

Head fi is pretty good for high end audio. When I say high end I mean in the range of B&w and Wilson and sonus faber($50,000 and above speakers), $18,000 Cast cables and amps that have the build quality of a shuttle landing on the moon.

My dad said that while that forum can be quite useful, real audio aficionados don't venture there but rather stick to product specific forums where you can avoid the morons who think having something like Bose makes them high end. If you think the guys over at head fi are snobbish....just talk to my dad rofl

Is there an acutal schematic anywhere? I see that "The design is freely available to everyone subject to the License terms." from the blog, but I don't see the design anywhere.

I actually PM'd him about this a few days ago, and he said he actually didn't plan on putting 1/4" in, even on the desktop model, but he imagined he could fit it in. The base desktop model runs 1/4" out but not in.

I also asked him about a mute button so I could just leave the volume set and mute when I was to switch to speakers, and he said, "I'm not sure about the mute switch, I'll have to ask NwAvGuy about it. There might not be an easy way to do it, but he's pretty responsive to questions."

Hmm, the article/guide wasn't exactly clear on the PCB part. So we have to get the PCB custom made? And the PCB along with the parts cost $30 (without case)? Or is it only the parts that cost $30, and the PCB is extra? Out of all the custom PCB makers I've seen, they're all pretty expensive.
Parts excluding case, batteries, vac, board and enclosure is about 30$. You can get board here.

Well, you need with the AC/AC wall transformer ($5.55) or batteries to power the thing, and you probably want the enclosure for safety (though nothing on the board is mains power). It's like $26 worth of components that go on the board plus AC transformer for maybe $6 in shipping, about $6 for a PCB incl. shipping if you act soon, and the rest is optional: $10.59 for an enclosure and unfortunately like $10 or so shipping there, $17 for a custom front panel and more shipping there.

All the parts required are listed in a spreadsheet, and you can copy+paste 95% of them into Mouser and import them like that.

About the group buy, it's a good way to avoid having to do a custom order through a PCB maker. The PCB files are in the documentation, and that would be all you would have to give somebody to get them made, but small runs aren't cheap at all. Hopefully somebody makes a large run later on and will sell single PCBs to people. Also it's much cheaper to do the current group buy (ending 8/31).

As you can see, lots of people are signed up already and the PCB is fairly small and simple, so prices are quite low (£ 3.09 for a single board to US, shipped, minus the PayPal fees):

Apparently you do, since you have about a dozen posts a day complaining about "snobbery" and "elitism".

Would any of you consider this a worthwhile upgrade to my ST's built in amp? I currently only have AD700s, and I don't plan on upgrading these until after Christmas this year. When I do upgrade though, I am looking at the DT880s or the 990s. At least the 250ohm edition, maybe the 600. The other headphones I am looking at are the HD600s or HD650s. Basically, I just want to know if my ST's amp can handle the headphones listed above well, or if I should get this amp as it appears to be the best at this price range.
