That is most odd. 40c idle on a D-14 is horrible! If I where you I would take the entire cooler off, clean off the TIM and reattach it, use less TIM than your pervious attampt.

With the OC I was idling at minimum of 47C. I just reapplied the TIM and now I'm idling at 44C minimum. It's helped slightly but guess I wont see the full effects until the TIMs worn in a bit?

What are you using for TIM? Crisco? wink.gif

Seriously, don't expect much of a drop from your TIM. There is something seriously wrong.

When you tighten the two tensioning screws, do they become stiff?

Are both of your fans pointed the same direction?

I'm using the Noctua TIM that came with it, heard it's pretty much on par with Arctic Silver 5. I used about a small peas worth of it.

And I tightened the screws until they stopped turning.

The fans are both blowing toward my rear exhaust.

+1 for trying to help!

Did the screws tighten easily, or were you working against pressure?

You might want to take some high quality pics of your heatsink, especially where the heatpipes go into the contact block.

Do the ends of the heatpipes seem intact?

Hey,

Sorry for the late reply but I somehow fried my motherboard! haha

Anyway, back with a new chip and board. Now sporting an i7 2600k and Z68 Asus Maximus IV Gene-Z.

My speedfan shows - http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/7/speedfancapture.png/

It says CPU Minus 60C!

By the way, I have not overclocked yet.

That is the socket temp. ignore the CPU temp. watch the CORE temps. that is what your CPU cores are at. the CPU temp is going to be a sensor close to the CPU socket. with those temps your ready to OC.

Sorry to hear you mobo shorted out. Would it be possible that you installed the cooler wrong and that is what shorted out the mobo?

Cheers for the info! Can I ask what SMIOVT temps are?

As for the shorted mobo, it wasn't down to the cooler, I bought a new PSU, plugged in the power connectors and it fizzled out! Think I used the wrong connector like a fool.

Also, I have read that a load of people are getting cooler idle temps than me with the just stock cooler! I'm sure some things not quite right. Shouldn't I be ideling in the mid 20s-30C?

Just did a quick Prime test and jumped to 50C straight away........FYI.

I don't know what the Intel version is called, but on AMD its called Cool n quiet.
This allows the CPU to down clock and under volt when the PC is at idle, and the clock and volt will only raise as needed based on what you are doing. but don't worry about idle temp's, they are meaningless. Load temps are what you should be looking at. I idle about 2c above room temp with cool n quiet on, but ALOT higher if I turn it off. your using the D-14 with stock paste and seeing temps of 50c at sock clocks? what is your ambient temp? 50c is still within the safe limit of your chip, so don't worry about the chip not liking it. I think you might have used to much TIM, less is more with that stuff.
