NTLDR is compressed?

Thread Starter
I am fixing a computer now, and it just gives the message "NTLDR is compressed", according to WIndows.com that means that the MBR is corrupt.

Any recommendations on how I would fix that problem?

Boot with the windows XP CD. Go to the recovery console. Type FIX MBR, and it'll prompt your what drive, and if you're sure you want to do this.

I agree with Evil, that should fix the MBR.

If that doesn't work, try using a app called GDISK. I think the command is:- GDISK /P:1 /MBR

I came to the same conclusion with it being the MBR, the problem is that Compaq has locked the main Admin Profile with their password which they did not give nad they did not give the XP Home CD with the computer.

Does anyone know of any good free programs that I can use to fix the MBR?

if that doesn;t work... grab your knoppix CD... and a floppy. Copy the file from a working system over... or wherever you can get one... you could do this with just a plain floppy too but you'll need two as the kernel takes up about a whole floppy. All XP kernels are identical so this has worked for me in the past.

You can get GDISK from here --> http://koti.mbnet.fi/~jmoksa/liiteri/prog/gdisk.zip

You will need to run it from a Win98 bootdisk
