Graphics Card Issue?

Thread Starter
I'm using a Sager 8130 laptop with a i7 2630qm CPU and the gtx 560m GPU.

I'm posting this in the NVIDIA graphics card section because I think this is an issue with the GPU and not the laptop itself.

The problem is that while running Counter Strike Source I am getting 30-60 fps while the CPU load is 25% and the GPU load is 0-5%...

When running furmark it goes up to 100% same with EVGA OC Scanner so the GPU is capable of going full throttle, but for some reason it isn't working with CSS. I'm wondering if there is any fix for this? I have updated drivers, tried changing settings in the NVIDIA control panel, but nothing has worked. I figured with a game like CSS that isn't graphic intensive at all, I should be getting tons more FPS as this laptop should be more than capable to keep me 200+ at all times.

I also ran Vantage to see if something was wrong with my GPU, but the results were perfect for my card and in the correct range.

Thanks.

Can you check if you're running on integrated graphics? You can find this option in your BIOS. If it's using dedicated, then there isn't a problem with the usage of your GPU. Not many games do actually use 100% of your GPU, just some of it, and CSS isn't very demanding (unlike Crysis).

My guess is that since CS:S is such an old game the CPU and GPU are scaling down because they don't feel the need to run at full power. You can change this by going into the BIOS and turning off Intel Speedstep technology (will make the CPU run at 100% all the time). I'm not sure how to turn off the "speedstep" for the GPU, so I'll let someone else comment on that.

My laptop does not run on integrated graphics nor does it have the option for SpeedStep.

The fact that CSS is an old game shouldn't matter because I should still be getting 200+ fps constant the same as with any other new computer...

Agreed on your assessment Kinru.

I do wonder though ... is that a quad CPU? Because a usage of 25% of the total is actually 'maxed out', if it's a single-core game. Supposedly the newest version of Source engine can utilize multiple cores, but maybe your version of CS can't? I dunno ... seems like w/such an old game a newer proc should easily be able to 'push' a lot of frames in it, but ... the symptoms certainly bear the hallmark of a cpu BN situation for a single core game

If you totally max out the graphics (16xQAA if available, etc), does it make the GPU usage go up, while the FPS stays the same? Because if so, that would be further evidence of cpu bn.

You think he could be CPU bottlenecked? I play a lot of L4D2 and TF2 (source engine), and even with multi-core rendering disabled my fps stayed way over 100. I can't imagine any i7 struggling with a source game that badly.

I mean I remember pulling 50-60fps with my ancient P4 & 6800GT back in the day.

The CPU is a quad core i7, I simply can't believe that it would struggle playing css. I did what you said however and while staring at a wall in a corner I was getting 80 FPS with all settings on low and the gpu load was about 10%.

After turning all settings to high I received about the same fps, maybe 20 higher and the GPU load was about 17%.

The CPU load the entire time was inbetween 20-30% and the temperatures across all 4 cores were the same (or nearly the same). I have multi-core rendering turned on in the game as well. When I turn it off, my FPS drops down to 20-30.

Does this happen in any other games or just CSS? Can you try any other source titles?

Also post a 3DMark Vantage/11 score. It should give an idea of whether your system is performing up to spec.

I just ran 3DMarkVantage and received a score of P10513 on performance.

GPU Score was 8545 and CPU score was 33985.

Everything seems fine there, CSS is the only game this is happening with (and the only older game I have). Other games like JC2 run just fine similar to Vantage. Seems that there is an issue with CSS only and I can't figure it out.
