is it really that much better these days ? Is it not just as good to have a completely digital sound system with high quality media ? Surely these enhancements are only a real benefit if your using bad media or bad/analogue speakers.

It's not like sound is really processing intensive by todays standards.
I have a feeling Creative are just trying to make a card that is great for marketing.

Actually it's opposite. High quality audio equipment is only as good as the signal delivered to it. Having high quality source files is important, but the amplifier section is very important to an audio system.

The DSP processing affects the positional audio characteristics the most (very apparent w/ headphones in regards to the sound feeling close up or far away from you), while the amp section affects the general quality of the sound you're getting (bass especially). They're both important, and integrated audio is crappy in both departments.

Auzentech. One of the better card manufacturers IMO. I had a Prelude for a few years and loved it. Had the same issue arise that many others had with it making a "crackle and pop" noise. Replaced it with a Titanium HD when they were released and have been very happy with it.
