I would suggest:

A) Check compatibility with your board and it's QVL list to see if Ripjaws were supported at release.

B) Test from boot with Memtest 86+ (bootable CD, free ISO download) just for a second opinion; remember to do only one stick at a time.

C) Check to be sure you have not damaged the RAM by jamming it in the slot too hard.

D) Double-check your BIOS settings and be sure the RAM is setup properly in accordance with manufacturer's specifications; voltage, timing, frequency.

E) Purchase a kit of RAM that is on the QVL list for that particular motherboard and see if that resolves your problems.

The asus website says any memory is ok. What are the signs of a damaged stick of ram?All sticks are recognized by windows.

Physical damage should be obviously visible; for proper testing you need to test the sticks outside of Windows. You should really test with Memtest 86+ (there are other testing platforms also).

Also, they (ASUS) may say that generally it should take any type of DDR3 but they should have a QVL list available on which particular sets from which particular company were tested when it was released as is known to be compatible.

Some boards just don't like certain RAM chips.
