BF3 and the Useless/Usefullness of Soundcards

Thread Starter
Im looking into purchasing a sound card for BF3, possibly the refurb creative titanium fatality or the asus xonar, but I have read.that BF3 doeant support sound cards and that they are a waste of time. Some have said as long as u have a good cpu a sound card for.bf3 will be useless.
Just wanted some clarification from some bf3 nuts about the sound situation. Rep for help
post #2 of 9
the battlefield series has always been known for superb sound. really depends on what audio equipment you have. if you have headphones, they will benefit from a sound card... whether it's directional sound or explosions, a sound card helps in almost any event.
What do you mean by "useless"? You mean no hardware accelerated sound? Microsoft eliminated hardware accelerated sound in 2007 with Vista when they redid the Win audio stack.

Well I guess it depends on how good your onboard audio is.

Oh I have loved.the bf series sound in the past. Im actually about to buy that $100 2.1 speaker system from creative as its on sale at newegg for 70. I mostly use my speakers even though I have some audiotechnicas.

What im getting at is that in the past, like in bf2142 the game had options and was made to work witb EAX on the creativesound cards. I really enjoyed those features. What I have read about bf3 is that they have made 0 effort to support sound cards, and many have even said that they are useless for bf3.
It seems to me like a sound card would still improve sound quality over a basic onboard sound even though the game isnt coded to take full advantage of sound cards.
But some ppl in the bf3 forum basically imply that a sound card is useless with the game. Thats where my question comes in.

Define "take full advantage of soundcards".

If you're using analog outs, you're still getting benefit from the soundcard DAC, which almost always does a better job than onboard. That is the primary function of a soundcard, to do DAC duties. Almost no one uses digital outputs in the gaming community and hence offloading the DAC duties to another device. With modern multi-core CPUs the amount of CPU overhead taken from video processing etc to do sound is minute.

EAX is being deprecated in favor of OpenAL-though the later is rather uncommon as of now. Soundcards have not changed much in years, but every manufacturer does things differently, and every manufacturer leaves much to be desired with driver upkeep.

Alright, I figured they still had a use. I was just conused because of so many people calling it useless and me being out of the sound card loop for so long. I think im gonna like what ill get out of the creative titanium thats 75 on amazon. Even though I know they suck at drivers lol. Though iirc someone makes 3rd party drivers.
Thanks for the info.

The difference between onboard and dedicated is amazing. If you have surround sound speakers a sound card can change it to 5.1 even if the game has no native support for that.

Creative sb xfi ti pro+Psyko Audio 5.1 cans= i can hear you loading your weapon in the room next to me.

Meh. Upconverting an audio stream from native stereo->5/7.1 usually sounds like poop compared to native 5.1 audio. Almost never gets the spatial location right.
