XDR2 or as some people might know it as, The successor to Play Station 3's main XDR system RAM. That's right folks, PS3's Cell CPU has 256mb of XDR RAM.

What?

XDR2 should be just a wee bump in overall bandwidth *wink wink*

Actually, that's not too far off from what's been said. They're supposedly doing an OEM only 28nm die shrink of Fermi, which will be the GTX 600 series, and then Kepler will be the GTX 700 series. Think both are due in 2012.

Memory bandwidth is not dramatically higher than previous generations.

Indeed, current 6000 series GPUs have more bandwidth relative to GPU performance than even the XDR2 versions of the 7000 series listed in this article.

256MB of XDR:64-bit memory bus.

The 360 has 10MB of embedded RAM + 512MB of GDDR3:128-bit memory bus which serves up 256Gb/s + 20Gb/s of bandwidth, the same as these modern GPUs.

So it would be cool if Microsoft done away with main memory and just used a large pool of embedded memory. No doubt their next-generation design decisions will weigh this because emulating Xbox 360 games that utilized the 10MB of EDRAM will be difficult unless there's a quantum leap in bandwidth between the CPU, GPU, and main memory.

Yeah, whoops, thanks for catching that. +rep
I'm surprised no one caught this. You were right the first time Brutuz. CPUs and GPUs use different nodes. At least the passed 2 shrinks, GPUs have been/will be slightly smaller than CPUs. When CPUs were 45nm, GPUs became 40nm, Now while CPUs are 32nm, GPUs will be 28nm.

Putting 5,000 dollar processors in consoles probably wouldn't have gone so well.

I think you are overstating the benefit of the eDRAM.

Also, such a quantum leap has already occurred. Main memory on current high-end GPUs is nearly as fast as the internal eDRAM bus in the XBox360. The large L3 caches on modern CPUs are nearly as fast.

Furthermore, The XBox 360 eDRAM was severely limited in what it could be used for, as it's bandwidth to the rest of the system was not especially impressive.
