Antec 300 - Possible to turn 3.5" HDD bays into hot swap bays?

Hello,

I'm going to be purchasing an Antec 300 case soon. While other cases I've looked at, such as the Corsair Obsidian 600 and 800 have some nifty features such as grommets for easier cable management and hot swappable drive bays, I chose the Antec 300 because of the great reviews it's gotten with regard to cooling and it suits what I'm looking for aesthetically.

I'm planning on cutting out holes to fit grommets from the Corsair Obsidian series ( which hopefully won't be entirely covered up by the mobo I'm looking at GIGABYTE GA-Z68P-DS3 ), cutting a hole in the bottom for better PSU airflow, and painting all grey metal parts of the case black. While these I believe will vastly improve the Antec case, I still want to do a little more, specifically I want to replace the 3.5" HHD bays with hot swappable drive bays like those found in ( again ) the Corsair Obsidian series.

Is the drive bay replacement feasible? Also, what part should I be looking for to do that, more specifically should I be looking for drive cages or some sort or some type of RAID-like internal enclosure ( I'm not going to be doing RAID, I'm just using it as an example of the type of internal enclosure I'm referring to ).

Thanks for any info you guys might be able to provide.

( Note: Not sure if it makes a difference but I intend of putting a 560 ti GPU in case as well )

You would have to get some PCB and mount them lined up perfectly.

a_zalman_zm-hs100_hot_swap_pcb_bottom_view.jpg

The hard drives mount from the back side so the pcb would have to go at the front of the case. Infact if you mod the front you count side them in from the from and then the pcb would be at the back.

It wouldnt be ideal as the hhds aint on rails, they are screwed so you wouldnt be about to secure the drives... If you want true hot swap then you would have to get 5.25 hot swap bays and there your looking at $20 X 3. which is another ball park for cases.

I am definitely wanting to turn the 3.5 HDD bays into true hot swap bays, even if it may mean removing them and somehow replacing them with 5.25 hot swap bays. So long as there's no conflict with cable management and there's potential that it will look slick.

Not to complain at you personally, but how many people actually take their drives out from a hot swap bay? Yea its a cool feature and all, but really.. are you gonna take them out and put them into another computer, or replace the drives with spares/backups?

I mean, just askin smile.gif

Good question. One reason is because this case is going to last me for a long time because I don't intend on buying a new one for at least 5 years, so I want to add in all the bells and whistles I desire. The other reason is because I'm going to be rotating new storage drives in and out periodically.

Ultimately it's a fun little project that I'd like to document and log so that other people planning similar modifications to a case will have something to glean some hints from.

I've found and already order the drive cage ( http://www.corsair.com/graphite-series-600t-drivecage.html ) that I want to put into the Antec case but now I'd just like to get some advice on how to remove the existing HDD cage from the Antec 300 and mount/install the Corsair drive cage.

Why not get one that takes up 3 5.25 bays and holds 4 HDD's then?

Thanks for the suggestions but I want to keep the front intake fans and make the hdd's accessible from the side of the case, like they are for the Obsidian 650D and 600T since I've found the hot swap bay I've been looking for yesterday ( http://www.corsair.com/graphite-series-600t-drivecage.html )

I think im missing something, what i posted goes in the 5.25 bays, not in the intake part of the front panel. If you use the 2 bay/3 drive from Kingwin youll still have a space for an ODD.

Yea i was going to do this to my A300 but decided not to since i don't remove drives that much. But anyways you just need a PCB with the connectors on it, line it up and glue it and it should work fine.

Edit like this one

My mistake. At this point I have the ordered the bay I've been looking for. Now I'm just looking for any tips on removing the existing 3.5 bays and putting in the Corsair one so that it's facing the side panel like in the pictures for this case.
