Episode 5.1: Supplies and Dedication.
SO! It has been a long time since I have had a chance to do anything with the rack and with college courses started again, I knew I would not likely have another chance to do work until the Spring Break. So I planned the next two servers around a couple of needs: A file server and an SMP8 folder.
(Shame that the rules for -bigadv have changed, I will have an 8-threaded SMP rig
). I will have a -bigadv rig at some point, but for now, this will do. I was waiting for all the parts to arrive so that I can build both at once, but only the parts for the fileserver are here.1. "Baku", meaning a creature that devours dreams and nightmares.
This machine will devour all my files. Simple enough, right?
☼ Soc.775 Asus P5G41m LE board (Nothing Special).
☼ Pentium Dual-Core 3.0ghz CPU.
☼ 2x1gb DDR2 800 (Generic).
☼ 3x1TB WD Caviar Green (Storage, NOT RAID, Still in the mail.
☼ 1x37GB WD Raptor 10kRPM (Boot\OS\VM).
☼ Antec Shelf Air Cooler.
☼ Rosewill RSV-R4000 4U Server Chassis.
☼ CORSAIR Builder Series CX430 V2 PSU (Still in the mail
I want to use the above hardware for JUST file storage for media storage and for sFTP/SSH access. I have been using my sigrig as a fileserver, but as I have said, this tends to bog it down during heavy usage in the house and I do not always want my sigrig to be running. Plus, I will have the ability to run Linux on this one in a VM to take the load off of "Destroyer" which had been hosting the files and the Linux server before, but with it hosting the TF2 server now, I needed to offload the bandwidth. The next build:
2. "Tardigrade", a very tough 8-legged creature that lives in some of the most inhospitable places on earth.
The reason for naming this rig a Tardigrade is that it never gives up on life. It has been found to survive the vacuum of space, the antarctic freeze and hot springs in the himalayas. As it crunches numbers, the SMP 8 rig named Tardigrade also does not give up on life.
