[AT]Ivy Bridge Configurable TDP Detailed

At Computex Intel announced that Ivy Bridge would be its first processor to support a configurable TDP. Today all CPUs are rated at a single maximum TDP. Mainstream notebook processors fall in the 35 - 45W range, while mainstream desktops are around 65W. As the world embraces mobility and interfaces like Thunderbolt enable new usage models for notebook users (e.g. docking station with a beefy external GPU), Intel had to rethink its power strategy.

Now this is an interesting development. I can see blown processors now on youtube.... But I adore heavy volts, and thus this is welcome. And here I was thinking IVY Bridge was not going to be a step up.

How is this different from limiting CPU clock via power schemes in the OS?

I suppose the usefulness of this depends how it's implemented. If it's really easy to change the tdp and very accessable, it could bring a primitive form of overclocking to the masses. If it's enabled on oem computers with a locked bios, people could squeeze a little bit more performance out of their computer without having to worry too much about stability or damaging their components.

Kind of like bringing the turbo button back... but i doubt it'd be that easy.

I wonder how much you can change, can you toggle cores and HT on and off? It would be cool to have an i7 laptop limited to one or two cores at low clock rates if you're on battery power but then ramp it up to full quad-core with HyperThreading at a higher clock rate when plugged in.

The trick to the masses is that they don't have to access or change it. It just works.

Most people don't care/know/want to change anything so this implementation will give them more performance with them having to do anything.... like the current energy save and turbo states.
Once again...

I'm waiting to hear what Intel will will be doing with atom going into 2013. I've heard there will be some massive changes to make the cores a lot faster.
