Best Virtualization Software for performance and flexibility?

Thread Starter
I have been a Mac guy for quite sometime. I have used Parallels desktop for the Mac to Virtualize Windows 7, XP, Ubuntu and Backtrack. I love it.

Now that I have this uber powerful desktop, which is now my primary machine, I need a good solid virtualization option for Windows 7, Ubuntu, and Backtrack. I am looking for best performance, as well as security options such as sandboxing the VM from the host, and encryption.

Some Co-Workers said VMWare workstation 7.1 is really my only option at this point, but I did a little research and found VM Ware workstation 7 came out in 2009... and looking at its features such as open GL support, etc, it seems dated and due for an update.

Any advice is welcome, thanks

Hardly!

VMware workstation is continually updated. Version 8 is on it's way and is infact in BETA. Also, there have been plenty of updates to the version 7 release up to this year.

I'd definitely go with it....

Although take a look at VirtualBox as well!

I too would recommend v7. Works great for multiple vm's. I too am a Mac guy and I'm actually looking forward to windows 8 because it is going to have Hyper-V built into the OS like server 08 does.

Vmware is really nice, especially its Drag-n-drop from the host, I never could get that to work in Virtualbox. However for an unknown reason, Vmware crashed out on me, and no amount of reinstalls could get it working. (Hence I switched to Virtualbox)

But Vmware is really good.

I've used VMware workstation and it is really good, but I don't think you need to spend $200. You could try VMware player it's free. Also there is a trial for VMware workstation.

i've been using virtualbox (win7/ubuntu) and it has been flawless. the one feature i like about it is that it lets users adjust the amount of RAM.

additional RAM has definitely make things smoother.

i may have to try vmware in the future. thanks.

Not exactly sure what you mean here....

If any piece of virtualization software did not let you adjust the RAM for the VM, I'd be getting worried.

Agreed. Thats basically standard.

VMWare Workstation is considered the best for a reason, and they gave you the right recommendations.
We use it at work for working from offsite.

And depending on what you will be running I would also recommend getting more Memory.
Your computer is far closer to a gaming rig than a VM workhorse at the moment.

Also...Great necro. redface.gif
