990-FXA-UD3 - Overclock CPU disables SLI?

So I'm wondering if this is a power supply issue....MOBO issue....or what.

Basically I got my RMA'ed GTX 560 back from EVGA yesterday and all was well.

Problem is -- at random times when I boot up, during the post an error message comes up saying "your machine has experience boot errors due to overclocking."

This happens even when running at stock clocks. At which point it automatically sets the HT link for 3000mhz and doesn't let me change ANY BIOS settings.

When it loads into windows, it doesn't recognize my 2nd GFX card. Basically I have to remove and reseat the card every time I boot up or this happens.

Is my PCIe16_2 slot dead or something? What's the deal here?

I have an 850w corsair power supply.

To be clear...it SEEMS like my system is drawing the necessary power from the PSU (for my 2nd card) but doesn't know what the power is going to, and therefore downclocks my system significantly.

The card works fine I've already tried it by itself. I **NEVER** had this problem with my original 2 sli cards though (exact same model as these == EVGA GTX 560 2GB)

Seems like any time I change my CPU or NB clock settings my PC stops recognizing my 2nd GPU.

At which point I have to remove it and boot up. Then shut down and re-install my 2nd GFX card -- at which point it boots up fine and recognizes my 2nd card instantly.

This happens even when going from overclocked (3.8ghz cpu / 2800mhz NB) to stock 3.3ghz 2000mhz NB.

I seem to have narrowed the problem down to the following:

Any time I change my CPU clock or voltage, the "error due to overclocking" message comes up during the BIOS post, and it notifies me that I've been reset to stock settings; except for some reason the HT link, which gets auto-set to 2600 or 3000mhz for some reason.

Is this a sign my board is dying or something?

God something gives me the feeling that half the ******* parts I bought were refurbished / RMAed parts being sold as new.

I mean really....what are the chances that a **NEW** GFX card, power supply, liquid cooling setup, motherboard, and RAM would **ALL** have problems?

All ordered from the same place -- all at the same time.

Guys, Phenoms are known to require high overclock to not bottleneck any dual GPU setup, just saying.

On the OP problem, does it do the same with just 1 card ?

Ok guys I have bought same motherboard, same GPU SLI (2 x MSi 560 Ti Hawk 950Mhz), same CPU (AMD Phenom II x4) and same PSU !! biggrin.gif
And I got huge problem in games which require CPU support. Both GPUs are working only for 45-55% in games like Battlefield 3 and Witcher 2 mad.gif However I got amazing nice score in Heaven Benchmark (2000). I didnt try overclock anything, but according to LesPaulLover's experience and I am not sure if it is safe....

Like Abs.exe told, this is probably CPU-related problem. I bought it only 6 months ago and i though it is strong cpu frown.gif But here I am, CPU is just probably not feeding my SLI enough.

UPDATE !!!

It looks like overclocking to 4050 MHz really helped me a lot! I just played one map with FPS around 90 with Ultra settings. Of course there was time with 53 FPS, but it was lowest FPS. My both GPUs working for 88% !!
