Alot of people that just use the internet for email, social just use laptops now, its only office workers(cheap to fill an office full of desktops, easily serviced), developers and gamers that really need desktop power.

Not until laptops become nearly as powerful.
Well into post-secondary I'll still be using my desktop for primary video editing tasks. My (future) laptop will also service this, and will probably even host a couple of projects, but not without at least docking and using my desktop to render as well through the network.

My desktop hooked up to the TV isn't going anywhere either. It'll soon be a lot smaller... but, like the TV setup, and like the 1080p media resolution, it definitely won't be going anywhere anytime soon. It's built with some legacy hardware (AM2/785G) that will be affordably powering a lot of HTPC (1080p playback) setups for years to come.

Laptops will never catch up to desktops. Desktops can accept much, much hotter components.

Has this guy never heard of monitors with built in speakers?

All laptops and netbooks have as an advantage over a desktop is portability.

I think it's laymen who mainly buy into the laptop market (apologies to those of you who don't fall into this category but really do need the portability).

The way I see it is, if there is anything small/portable and quite powerful then there is a bigger version (a.k.a desktops) which is many many many times better.

Rendering workstation, gaming will still need a tower to get the most out of current technology so I would say that rather then desktops going obsolete, they will become more exotic and enthusiast...err, thing.

I love to use a laptop or tablet on the couch messing about with different Linux distros, games, applications and browsing, but sitting in front of my desktop and using it just somehow feels right.

For the masses they probably are. Tablets, smartphones and laptops perform all the functions required of a desktop. The % of users who need to fully utilize the power of a tower is very small, compared to the % who don't, so can see the shift continuing its course.

First off, the guy in that videos needs to eat more food and take his balls out of a vice grip. With that said, I'm sure for a large percentage of the population a laptop is sufficient. However, there a number of drawbacks to go along.

Cons:
Lack of expandability
Lack of aftermarket parts
Overheating
Expensive:compared to a desktop
Not a very good option for gaming

A desktop computer is needed to actually make and program laptops. Videos games are made on desktops, without them there would be no console games for the fanboys.

Lastly, 64 players support for BF3 on the PC. Good luck getting that to work on a console or a laptop under $1000 on maxed out graphics.
