NOO!! Don't use q-tips!!!

Q-tips leave lint on the processor, which will interfere with the heat transfer to the heatsink. You need to use something that is lint free. The cheapest lint-free paper I know about is a coffee filter.

Coffee paper, with HIGH PURITY iso alcohol works really well for removing thermal paste.

EDIT: You can get isopropyl alcohol at any pharmacy, like CVS. Look for 90%+ purity.

Isopropyl alcohol and a lint free towel is good. Coffee filters are especially good at that.

Remove most of it with anything, finish with coffee filters and 95%+ alcohol if possible, at least 70%+, the higher the better.

I have this and it works really well: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835100010

However, a lot of people here will say that it is overpriced and a waste of money. But I like it. Plus it makes my CPU smell lemony-fresh instead of like rubbing alcohol, lol. If you go the isopropyl alcohol route, which is perfectly acceptable, get the 50% solution and you can also use it to clean LCD monitors. They will have it at any pharmacy.

Like the posters above said, make sure whatever cloth you use is LINT FREE.

Meh, Q-tips work just fine if you know how to use them.

If you are inexperienced, then use a lint free cloth.
