Ever Wonder How I Do All These Mods? - Page 3

Cyber the problem I would face if I had/lived where you are is
"should I mod or fish or shot something?"

I will post a pic of my tool box later, I am at work and can't upload squat from here,

I will say this, I payed more for my tools and box than I did for my car

I have started buying some of the more simple cutting tools for acrylic and all of these tools are expensive. Just an example we all can relate to, the tap and drill bit for the G1/4 fittings we all use came very close to 100.00 (54.00 for the tap and a bit over 30.00 for the drill bit). Don't even think of drilling into acrylic with a bit that has its cutting angles set for mild steel as you will chip the acrylic so bad you will end up starting over. Just getting all the general taps (and all the different application taps) counter bore bits is an expense you do not want to go through twice. I guard this stuff with extreme care and finding a tool man that will work with you to order all the cutting tools is not so easy, many tool men do not know about cutting tools for acrylic. I was an auto mechanic before I retired and I would have my stall setup with three air hoses (with a tool connected to each hose) and then two battery powered devices. All was done so you did not even waste the time changing out tools connected to the air hose. All I have is a drill press a table and a cutoff saw, then the host of general tools and I feel like I have nothing

EDIT: Watch that table saw,my Novell instructor lost all the fingers on one hand learning how to use the table saw safely as a teenager. Another dangerous tool is the 1/2 drill motor, espically when you are using a hole saw of the size needed to cut out the material for 120mm fans. One time I was bent over cutting some material on the floor and the cutting tool caught, the button to make it so you did not have to hold the switch "on" was engaged and the handles on that drill motor wacked my shins 2 times each before I could get away.

Tooling up is expensive. Funny thing is you will be lucky to get a dime on a dollar if you ever try to sell them.

That is certainly the truth, and I have no explaination as to why.People will pay the retailer or the tool man 200/300% of what it is worth but try and get your buddy to give you a dime on a dollar and you are out of luck.

Its the whole mentality of "well you dont want it anymore, why should i have to help you recoup your loss?" On the other end of the spectrum, theres a really thin line between finding a good deal that you can make money on, and down right insulting someone with an offer.

I need to rebuild it. The top has seen a few too many drill bits. But it gets the jobs done. Next project will be a nice desk for the Wife. I've got the Caribbean Rosewood...just need about 4 sheets of cabinet grade Birch and I can get started. Drew up the plans almost a year ago...but one thing after another kept the project on hold. Once I finish up this last mod I'll get going on the desk. I'm going to ebonize the maple with my own stain (steel wool and vinegar make and awesome permanent ebonizing stain) and lay down 10 coats of flake shellac like I did for the Caligacab and top that with 3 coats of satin polyurethane for good water resistance. Should look pretty awesome at that point. I'll leave the Rosewood natural. Came up with my own profile for the moldings and edge. Really looking forward to doing some work that is not client-driven.
