[Completed] Oceanus : Water cooled, ITX, i7 2600, HD6950 2GB

My love affair with ITX systems started when i co-built one for my girlfriend a year ago. Soon after completing the tiny little gaming beast, I realized that there's just too much to love about it!

1. Compact Size in places where space is at a premium [tiny desk, tiny rooms, etc, etc]
2. Portable PCs are great for LAN parties and as a conversation piece!
3. the Challenge of cramming so much power in such a tiny package!

My sister inherited my MATX setup and that left me free to build an entirely new one!

So I built an AM2+ ITX system into a Silverstone SG05 [Asus M4A88T-i, EVGA GTX460, Silverstone ST45SF, 4gig RAM, Scythe Big Shuriken and Xigmatek 59.9CFM Fans.]... which is NOT what this post is about. A friend of mine saw it on my fbook page and promptly bought it off me.

With the cash, I decided to go build a stronger system [Ovation HTPC Case, Asus M4A88T-i, Sapphire HD6950 1gb, Silverstone ST45SF, 4gig RAM, Scythe Big Shuriken and a Scythe Gentle Typhoon Fan]. I wanted to go with as flat as possible. I got as far as 80mm in thickness using a flexible 16X PCI-E Riser card. Another friend on fbook saw it and bought it off me. he also paid extra so that i would take the pictures of the PC from my fbook down. He said none of his stuff is up for geek pr0n usage... sad. So this post is NOT about the flatish PC as well.

My current project is what I'm writing about.

As my first post [sans n00b introduction] I had no idea if this should be in the Work Log section or here in the SFF builds. I was torn about it and decided it's safer to go with the Work Log section. If i err, please move the thread or tell me to make a new thread and please spank me for being a naughty naughty boy! I NEED DISCIPLINE! SPANK ME!!! SPANK MEEEEEEE!!!!

Notes : I'm working on a very unstable budget. So parts come in very slowly. Some time has been spent to gather up materials so I can post something that may be of value for everyone.

I will reveal the parts of the case, the internals and the cooling system as they make their way to my grubby hands! biggrin.gif

Case 1 - The Beginning
I never had the chance to take pictures of the case [pre-molestation] because I didn't think i'd be posting here. Another friend of mine prompted to do so just so he can look it over [fbook is blocked at his office. bummer].
The case is the Antec VSK 2000.

I managed to get this budget case at a 2nd hand price! The money I saved from the transaction will go a long way towards completing the cooling setup.
It took me a few agonizing months to settle for this case.

Here are some photos of its stock form from the Antec Website!

Roomy interior. Great budget-midtower for an ATX system. Let's make it ITX friendly!

Case 2 - Micronization
Using the term from the old Macross series, Micronization is a miniaturization process where a Giant race called the Zentraedi reduced their size to normal human levels. For this build, i wanted to romanticize and use the term since I'm reducing an ATX case into an ITX case.

With my trusty marker, ruler, drill, angle grinder, dremel and a lot of cutting disks I cut a lot of excess material and reversed the motherboard tray and PSU placement.

A cut and folded length of illustration board to mark where I'll be placing an acrylic mid-plate.

Top part doesn't look that clean yet. but I'll be doing something to remedy that towards the end of the project.
2 PCI Slots for the HD6950 I'll be using!

Bottom mounted PSU, top mounted Video Cards!
318659_10150299336306793_539351792_8311804_1249275166_n.jpg

I'll see about formatting the remaining pictures and taking new ones as the project goes on.

Have a great day!

Last week, I wanted to start leak testing so it was time to turn into a plumber!

Things I learned on my first day plumbing:
1. Double check all fittings and tubes. Make sure they're all tight or else...
2. Good supply of wide-ply paper to detect leaks AND soak up water.
3. A small pail goes a long way to making sure my table does not turn into a pool!

Tangle of Tubes.

Thanks for the encouragement, Hammertime! I'm pressuring myself to complete the build as fast as a I can. We're adopting a new cat from the local animal shelter and I'm very worried about my open air setup frown.gif

I did some test fitting just so I can eyeball certain measurements.
Here's a view of the internals with all the 1/2" tubes. The clear tubes were given for free along with some of the compression fittings. Since it's impossible for me to find replacement clear tubes, I decided to use them for test fitting and such. The white tubes are more plentiful and easier to get too. So my build will be done with all white tubes.

It's a pretty snug fit with the Sapphire HD6950 on top. But I do know that it will get better with the full coverage GPU waterblock I'm getting!
300094_10150299405736793_539351792_8312169_1170093606_n.jpg

Here's a mockup I did using leftover illustration board. This will form the midplate that separates the lower section [psu & rad] from the top section [mobo, gpu, res, pump, hdds, etc]. It's still a rough template and things I'm bound to redo it just to make sure everything is where it should be.
318504_10150299406161793_539351792_8312172_1664534605_n.jpg

Hole placement in the mockup for cables to pass through. namely the 24pin power connector, the sata cables, the front headers, usb headers and the 4 pin power connector. Hmmmm! needs adjustment.

Hello there usmcz! I am from the tropical islands of the Philippines. I'm glad to find another person who appreciates these tiny systems! biggrin.gif

The Good News:
My friend looked over the mockup I gave him and he said he'd make it out of acrylic for me. It'll take a week since he has to sneak it in to his full schedule and he's doing it as a favor. I left the case with him so that he can make the necessary adjustments to make sure it fits perfectly.

I visited a pc parts specialist in another city and snagged a Bitspower T-Block.
314937_10150303431751793_539351792_8332732_1292163500_n.jpg
300566_10150303431826793_539351792_8332733_1161128867_n.jpg

Eyeballing measurements in the case and test fitting certain parts, I was trying to figure out how i was going to fit my pump and reservoir. The res was too tall and I didn't want to bore a hole through the lid of the case just to make a pseudo fillport. If i placed the reservoir outside I wanted to keep the pump inside to take full advantage of the acrylic top on the pump and LEDs it could hold.

I'm still debating if I need to fabricate a platform for the pump to rest on the acrylic midplate and feed water to the RAM or if it will be placed on that vacant place to the side of the mobo and below the GPU.

Either way, the T-Block will help me feed water to the pump while filling the loop or as a potential drain for when I need to swap coolants.

I also managed to snag an XSPC Razor 6970 full coverage block!

296486_10150303433261793_539351792_8332742_1227397430_n.jpg

The Bad News:
My HD6950 is not a reference design and the XSPC Razor 6970 won't fit. Luckily a friend decided to buy my HD 6950 so I have the cash for a new one. In the mean time I'm running off a GT210. a back up video card i have lying around.

More Bad News:
There's a shortage of reference PCB HD6950s in my country. A retailer told me to wait a week, he'll see about hooking me up with one. frown.gif

So for now it's a waiting game for me. I can work on the Midplate and the color scheme that I want for the case. The water block is undergoing a leak test [no leaks so far!]

The waiting... it kills!frown.gif

Next updates with pictures will most likely come next week.
1. The new old-reference-HD 6950 mated with the XSPC waterblock
Although the system is more for show and not for overclocking, I want to see if the XSPC RS240 is enough to cool the system down. If not, I can get my hands on the RX240. My initial calculations with measurement ensures that the thicker radiator will still fit under the midplate.

2. The clear acrylic midplate is completed by my friend.
The midplate that separates the lower and upper sections of the PC gets fitted into the case. I will temporarily install all the hardware so i can eyeball a few more measurements.

I intend to have at least one more section crafted out of acrylic.

3. Reducing the side panels and cutting a window.

Until then, the waiting... it kills!
