is it better to use Native IDE or AHCI for a single Sata Drive

Thread Starter
I am wondering if should use AHCI or native IDE. I was told that AHCI is the best option but I will have to format which I do not mind doing if I get the most out of my drive

Always AHCI.
The name Advanced Host Controller Interface should give that away wink.gif

Better question is why does IDE mode still exist on newer motherboards.
Believe it or not but ide drives are still selling and purchased. It really has not been removed from the market completly.

well i have done stress tests on both and benches etc...... ACHI is almost a 1% better.

a lot more stable as well so you will constantly get a 75meg write verse ide all over the place (note the 75 meg is just an example)

On that board you should flip to AHCI.

IDE benchmarks the same as AHCI, but if you examine the CPU usage, you'll realize why IDE is bad.

At times when your I/O is hit the hardest (game loading?) your CPU is also hit the hardest. IDE has about 10x as much CPU usage on most boards/benchies that I've seen, so if your CPU is maxed (by game loading) your I/O speeds will end up being quite a bit lower as well.

IDE = Follows the old 40/80 pin speeds of up to 100 MB/s, but never faster than 133 MB/s period.
AHCI = Faster true SATA speeds 3GB/s (or in the case of SATA 3, 6GB/s)

IDE BIOS emulation is not speed capped. But it does take a heck of a lot more CPU time.

I've seen HDTune benchmarks here around 25% CPU usage in IDE mode. Flip to AHCI and it drops to 1.5-2.5% tongue.gif
