Help, confused?

post #1 of 5
Thread Starter
I am currently running a Q9550 LGA775 and decided to replace my old motherboard with a more up-to-date motherboard. I found this particular motherboard (GIGABYTE GA-P45T-ES3G LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard) that supports DDR3 so I went ahead and bought it as well as 8gs of Gskill 1600 DDR3.

The motherboard specs says it supports 1600 DDR3 so I bought 2x 4Gs of 1600 DDR3. Well I went in to check on it and it had the timings screwed up. It timed them at 9-9-9-28 the timing on the package is 9-9-9-24 so I manually changed it. Next I looked at the mhz it is running at and by default 1333 mhz. I tried to change it to 1600mhz but there was no option for it. Im a bit confused, does this motherboard really only support 1333 mhz? Will my memory run okay at 1333mhz? should I send it back to get 1333mhz?

Any help will do!

That board does support 1600Mhz but you may have to change the cpu multiplier and fsb to get it ! Some boards will support that speed but at OC settings. Your Q9550 runs at a standard 1333mhz fsb so the ram has been matched to that by the looks of it. Between 1333mhz and 1600mhz there really is little noticable difference, however if you have 1600mhz ram this would allow you more room to overclock as your ram can go upto 1600mhz. But if your happy without overclocking then 1333mhz is fine, keep the ram as this would allow you to overclock in the future should you want to.

Q9550 = FSB 8.5 x 156 ? = 1333mhz Ram matched @1333mhz
Q9550 = FSB 8.5 x 188 = 1600Mhz Ram matched @ 1600mhz

^^^^ for example ^^^

Overclcoking is done entirely at your own risk *

I have no idea what that means...
The Q9550 has a default FSB of 333MHz -> that is why it is running @2,83GHz stock speed.
(8,5x333MHz=2,84GHz)
You RAM is at 1333MHz because of that FSB! (4x333MHz= ~1333MHz)
You will need a 400MHz FSB so that you RAM can work@1600MHz.
So your FSBx4=RAM frequency
Your CPU will be at 400x8,5=3400MHz!
If you have no idea how to change the FSB ratio this is what your system would be.

lol how could i have missed that !! 8.5 x 156 ? my bad Mr Eiht has hit the nail on the head. I calculated the fsb from 1600Mhz and not 2.83Ghz what a plonker i am !! Human error Doh ! But as Mr Eiht says you will have to change your FSB, i had to cange mine to get my ram @1333mhz.

Thanks guys. I figured that out last night after doing some testing. I just put my fsb at 400 to get an exact 1600 out of the ram. One thing I did want to make clear is leaving the RAM under its regular clock is okay?
