It's been pretty obvious for a few months now that at least one new iPhone (most likely the 4S) is being unveiled in early October. I don't see why this particular announcement is news...it's just because he's a famous person, isn't it?

Like I said, the association is appropriate. Al Gore's carbon footprint is also astronomical.

As you can see by 99% of the posts in this thread relating to gore & or politics, south park references, or the likelihood of man's influence on climate change; yes.

I heard in 2021 we will have an iPhone 73.

Seriously though, Apples numbering system just makes everything seem so obslete a few months after purchase. They really want people to buy a new expensive phone ever year that has minor improvements (most of which could be implimented via software/firmware).

Cell phones in general have been on an "upgrade" cycle like this long before the iPhone was ever around. Also, Apple makes its software updates available to all its phones, it's some Android devices who get left in the dust when new "desserts" are released.

They release one phone per year. What happens when you buy your top of the line droid and then six months later there's three new models available that are better? Why wouldn't you keep your iPhone just as you would your droid?

What? The hardware improvements have always been significant and each year a new version of iOS is released for free.
