Little Blue - Mini ITX Autonomous Boat Brain - Page 6

alright, enough suspense

The computer is for my senior design project for my Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering at Old Dominion University.

That's right, it is going on a boat, however, it is not just going on the boat.

It is the brain of our Autonomous Surface Vehicle for the annual RoboBoat competition.

Those pictures are of our boat in previous years. we will be using the same frame and pontoons, however we are completely re-vamping the electronics with this new computer, and Ardupilot Mega, two Arduino controllers, two new vision cameras, a new LIDAR, and new speed controllers.

previously the team had been using an old laptop in a plastic box to control everything, it was not even close to powerful enough and had severe overheating issues.

I am in charge of replacing that computer with this one that will handle all of our computer vision and state of motion calculations. the water cooling is to dump the heat outside of the case it is going in.

One thing that I have not posted any hints of yet is that this will be run entirely off of a jet ski battery. that is the reason for the low power 2100t over the 2200.

hope you all excited to see this come together

Oooooh, me likey!

Even cooler than I expected.

An idea: Skip the rad altogether, intake in the front and exhaust out the back for a little extra propulsion. Of course you would need a filter and would have to hope said filter doesn't get clogged but...it's an idea.

Not sure if you're concerned with drag, but submerge the rad in the lake/pond/whatever, even if it's flush with the bottom

Yes, submerge the box in a very tight water proof aluminium box (with a vent at the top, much like a chimney + a fan) and it will exhaust the hot air and the aluminium box will absorb the waters coolness.

I think.

What would be the point in that? Just dunk the rad, won't hurt it in the short term.

glad you like, I know I am pretty stoked to be working on the project.

we considered that, but we want to be able to run the computer out of the water while we are working on things.

that is a possibility we have discussed. we are going to try passive first, hopefully that will be enough to cool 35w.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

so, first hitch...

The power supply I had picked out and that has been ordered is this one:

http://www.mini-box.com/M3-ATX-DC-DC...8&category=981

now the more observant of you will pick out the problem REALLY quick... however I stupidly missed it.

that PSU is only a 20-pin ATX, and the motherboard requires 24-pin ATX + 4-pin P4...

so I just emailed my professor and told him I messed up... hopefully we will be able to return that one and order one of these:

http://www.mini-box.com/M4-ATX-HV

That power supply has a bunch of cooler features, but it is bigger, heavier, and more expensive... oops.
