Following on from my video post of 5Ghz overclock, I made a slight addition to my setup with a fan mod following on from reading another post on OCN (that I can't seem to find now unfortunately).

Basically I bought two 125mm -> 100mm reducers and a one metre flexible ducting tube. Then using some hot glue I joined the front facing fan on the case to the first Noctua fan on the NH-D14 CPU cooler to create a natural direct airflow funnel through the CPU cooler.

Knocked another 5->8 degree's off the CPU temps on the 5Ghz overclock so well happy with that. Here are some photos:

The posting you referred to may have been mine. There was some very useful analysis and suggestions for improvement by Windfire that is worth reading.

Oh, a further improvement. Throw away the noctua fans and put in Thermalright TY-140s. You can get them from scan.co.uk

It was indeed. Very interesting and got me thinking of how to make a similar solution. Very impressed so far. Thanks.

Looks good alright. I think I've spent enough on this rig for now though. wink.gif

Haha, I know where you are coming from. I have about 4 noctua fans and two apache blacks lying unused now smile.gif. I looked at your video and saw you have a big 200mm fan on top. It may be worth trying Windfire's suggestions regarding the top fan. It resulted in further improvement for me

Hey guys, any advice on cooling my Fatal1ty build. I'm planning on going full liquid cooling but been having problems due to limited PC case size.

If you have a top exhaust fan, I'd be inclined to say to turn the fan in the cooler around so it pulls air from outside the case in, and then exhausts it via the top fan. Also add another push fan on the outside. If you can, swap the fans for something better.

That's because you have likely not increased the short and long duration power limits, so your cpu is throttling. Go back to the screen shots I posted of my bios settings and duplicate them. You should have these limits set to about 200 each. Once you have done this though, you will probably need to set your vcore offset higher.

The higher voltage being put through the cpu at the higher clock is causing the thermal dissipation limit set in the short and long power duration to be exceeded, which is what causes the cpu to throtle back. Upping the limits avoids this, but will also allow the cpu to draw more voltage and current and thus get hotter

What about fixed voltage? While we're on it what's the difference between fixed and offset?

Oh yes, and I picked one of these up for a dedicated folding rig, add me to the club biggrin.gif

I really appreciate all the info everyone is sharing. Helps in finding settings for a stable overclock.

I have one question though and perhaps it is a bit silly to be asking on this forum.

Has anyone managed to get stable operation with stock settings all on Auto?

I just want to get an idea of whether it's some other hardware i have which is by no means exotic that is causing the random lock ups and BSOD.
Sometimes I go days or weeks with nothing and other times once or twice a day it happens.
I've actually found overclocking is more stable than stock??

Kinda frustrating that if you just want to go stock it's not even fully stable.

hoek53, what are your system specs, os, etc. By chance are you using Raid? SRT?

I also wanted to say hello to everyone. I have been a long time lurker and finally decided to build a new machine. I just got my board Tues so my system is not fully built, but I will report back how the build is going once I start.
